Ashland Progress
Mrs. Mattie Chasteen Hamil passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. E. 
Stanford, with whom she made her home, in Mellow Valley Community, on September 
17th, following a long illness. Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock on 
September 18th at Providence Church, directed by Blair. Elder B. B. Finley, 
Reverends Grady Birchfield, Rubin Birchfield, Denney and Aiken officiated. 
Interment was in nearby cemetery. Pallbearers were Boyd Hamil, Floyd Hamil, 
Artford Anderson, Olin Strong, N. H. Carwile, Q. P. Carpenter. She is survived by 
one son, J.P.  Hamil; one daughter, Mrs. J.E. Stanford; three sisters and two 
bro. Mrs. Hamil had reached the age of 73, was born in North Carolina but had 
lived in this section for a long period of years.
