Ashland Progress
On Friday, August 28th, the death angel claimed Memphis B. Hawkins for his own. 
The going of this young man has brought sorrow and sadness to father, mother, 
sister and brothers and a host of relatives and friends. His untimely death was 
a great shock to everyone. Memphis graduated at the last term of the Clay County 
high School and would have taken up his work as teacher about the last of 
September. His future seemed so bright and promising. He was quite successful in 
all his undertakings. He was ever ready with a smiling face and willing hands to 
aid and assist his fellow man. His life was one of inspiration. When one in the 
purity and freshness of youth is called into the presence of his merciful 
creator it must be for his glory. Memphis was ever ready to discharge his duty 
in song or prayer service. He was a fine singer, gifted with a voice that 
touched the hearts of people, and he was loved by all who knew him, so I will 
say to the bereaved father, mother, relatives and friends weep not. Just picture 
him singing with the angels around the throne of God, where he's watching and 
waiting for you.

Our Mountain Home:
Memphis Hawkins, a well-known Clay County boy, was killed, on the highway near 
Cleveland's Crossroads, Friday, when a truck which he was driving turned over. 
Mr. Hawkins was a member of the 1925 senior class of the Clay County high school 
and finishing with high honors. Many friends regret to heir of his death.
