J. Jones, 94-year-old Confederate Veteran, by Rev. F. J. Ingram. Interment was in the church cemetery, Owens of Heflin in charge. Mr. Jones, who resided with his son, G. S. Jones, at Delta died late Friday afternoon following an illness of three weeks. He was a native of the Coosa River section about six miles east of Heflin, and he was prominent farmer until about 10 years ago when his advancing age caused his retirement. He was an active member of the United Confederate Veterans and attended numerous reunions. Known affectionately over a large area of Northeast Alabama as "Dad", Mr. Jones was the last surviving member of his regiment, the 30th Alabama, which was engaged in more than 20 battles during the War Between the States. He was never wounded, although he often told friends that more than once he escaped being struck by bullets merely by interception of his hat or coat. After the war he was an ardent Democrat and was known among a wide circle of friends and acquaintances as a Southerner who was proud of having participated in the struggle to defend Southern rights. Mr. Jones is survived by his widow, three sons, Bud, Charlie and Arthur Jones, all of Delta, and a number of grandchildren.
