The submitter has given permission to the USGenWebArchives to store the file permanently for free access. ************************************************************************************************** Contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Kaye Robertson Watts Dec 2002 Comanche County, Texas Comanche Chief, Issue 29 July 1955 Page 1B WILLIS ROBERTSON FOUND DEAD John Willis Robertson, 77, for more than fifty years a farmer residing in the Mount Pleasant community, three miles north of Comanche was found dead in a stock tank, some two miles from his home, Thursday, July 14. His body was discovered about 4P.M. Justice of Peace O.A. Braziel rendered a verdict of accidental drowning. Mr. Robertson, always known as a hard worker, got up early Thursday morning and after his breakfast, left home about 7:30 o'clock to cut cockle burs in a field near the stock tank. When Mr. Robertson did not return home for his dinner at his usual hour, Mrs. Robertson became uneasy and called in neighbors to join in a search for her husband. Joe Byrd, a neighbor of the Robertson's discovered the body after discovering Mr. Robertson's shoes at the edge of the tank. It was estimated that he had been dead since about 10 o'clock. Mr. Robertson was known to have had a habit of going into the water to cool off when working in the vicinity of the tank, and some of his friends thought he might have suffered a heart attack. Funeral services for Mr. Robertson were held at the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church Saturday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock. The rites were in charge of Rev. S.J. Isham, assisted by Rev. Bill Carroll. Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery, Comanche. Pallbearers were Mr. Robertson's grandsons; Larry Carter of Fort Worth, Johnnie Morris of Fort Worth, J.B. Robertson of Austin, Eugene Robertson of El Paso, George Ferrill Lloyd of Winters, Willis Davis of Winters, Choyce Hancock of Coleman and Merlin Ray of Winters. Mr. Robertson was born in Clay County, Alabama in June 1878. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Robertson. He grew to manhood in Alabama and was married there June 23, 1898 to Miss Lela Belle Roberts, who survives. Thier first daughter, Lillian May was born in Alabama. In 1900, Mr. and Mrs. Robertson and their baby moved to Texas, settling first in the Newburg community. Comanche County. Two years later they moved to the Mount Pleasant Community and had lived on the farm where he died for fifty-two years. Mr. Robertson was a successful farmer and up to a few years ago operated one of the best fruit orchards in this section. His operations in the past few years were devoted to stock raising. Mr. and Mrs. Robertson reared a family of seven children. A daughter, Jonnie Belle, died at birth in 1917. Children surviving, all of whom are successful in their endeavors are: Mrs. Lillian May Hodges of Comanche, Douglas Cortez Robertson of Winters, Mrs. Laura Lee Mobley of Stephenville, Mrs. Lela Faye Morris of Fort Worth, Mrs. Vivian (North) Carter of Fort Worth, William Milton Robertson of De Leon, and Sherrill Boyd Robertson of Fort Worth. Mr. Robertson is also survived by 18 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, L.A. Robertson of Waco and Loomas Robertson of Newburg, and two sisters, Mrs. Delia Lashley of Georgia and Mrs. Suzanne Pierce of Alabama. Mr. Robertson was converted in Alabama in 1898 and united with the Missionary Baptist Church. He had been a member of the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church for 45 years.
