It seems that Jim Allen and Wm Langford quarreled over some trivial affair, and in the row the latter cut the former's throat with a knife which resulted in death in a few minutes. Langford made good his escape and is not yet been arrested. [Note: It looks like the newspaper mixed up the victim & the assaulter names] Mar 6, 1896: James Allen charged with the murder of James Langford was tried in the circuit Court here last week. The jury reported Friday night, and by their verdict. Allen is guilty of murder in the 2nd degree, and he was sentenced to 10 years in the penitentiary. Some of the best legal talent in the state was employed of both sides, and the trial and argument was quite interesting. The attorneys for the defendant hope to get new trial. [Note: cannot document the given name of Mr. Langford as James or William. There is a Wm Lankford listed on the 1880 Almond Randolph County Census. Almond is just a few miles from Silkesville Clay County] File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/al/clay/obits/l/langford4309gob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/alfiles/ File size: 1.7 Kb
