Joe T. Smith killed his father-in-law Rev. Robert Lumpkin near the home of Verner White. Both parties were in Lineville an hour before the homicide. This terrible affair occurred over a dog. It is said that Joe Smith had sold Mr. Lumpkin's dog to a negro for $10.00 and there had been some feeling over the matter. When Joe Smith left town Mr. Lumpkin followed him with a shot gun accompanied by his son. The two overtook Smith near the home of Verner White and after some talk between Lumpkin and Smith. the latter shot the former four times with a pistol killing him. Additional Comments: There is a typo in the newspapers article. It is Rev. Dickerson G. Lumpkin not Rev. Robert Lumpkin. Clay County Marriages: J. [Joseph] T. SMITH to S. [Samantha] L.
