Upon investigation it was found that the body had been dead for several days and was badly decomposed. The skull was fractured in a number of places and several teeth were knocked out. Coroner Carpenter and the party which accompanied him are convinced that the man was murdered. It is thought that a clue, was discovered which will probably lead to the apprehension of the guilty party or parties. The victim of the awful tragedy was about 26 years of age and unmarried. He had been living with his stepfather. Jack Bryant, a citizen of that part of the county, but had been missing for ten days. The body was found in a secluded spot among the mountains about six miles this side of Sylacauga and hear the line of Talladega County. Ashland Progress Jul 12, 1913 Alex and Pink Bryant, who are charged with killing Carl Machen in the western part of the county some weeks ago, were given a preliminary hearing before Justice W. T. Dean, Tuesday and Wednesday. The trial resulted in Pink being granted bail in the sum or $500 while Alex was denied bail. A large crowd of witnesses at tended the hearing which consumed two days time. Additional Comments: Alex Bryant was sent to prison for the murder of Carl Machen.
