Reports are that he had gone to town with a load of cotton and was on his wagon on the streets when death struck him. He was seen to fall over and some parties who were near rushed to him and a physician reached him in a few moments but all to no avail. He died quite suddenly. Mr. Matthews formerly lived a few miles east of Ashland where he engaged in farming. A few years ago he sold out and moved near the western boundary of Clay, where he resided at the time of his death. His remains were brought to his old home community for interment, the funeral being held at Providence Saturday afternoon. Mr. Matthews was well-known in Ashland, where he was a frequent visitor. He was more than sixty years of age, and is survived by his wife and seven children, six daughters and one son.
