McConniell, who was a mixer foreman for the construction company, which is constructing the Will Cummings highway, was attempting to descend a steep embankment near the creek when the tragedy occurred. The caterpillar tractor had gotten about a fourth of the way down the bank when it suddenly turned sideways in the loose rocks and turned turtle. The victim was not thrown clear of the tractor and when it came to rest McConniell was pinned beneath the inverted machine. His left leg was crushed into the ground by the tractor. He was attempting to take the tractor into the creek, from which the company gets its water supply in the mixing of concrete and attach it to a pump. He had intended to pull the heavy apparatus onto the highway, coworkers said E. C. Clark, a mechanic for the company, said: "A couple of the boys and myself rushed to McConniell's assistance as soon as we could and tried to pull him from under it, but he kept telling us we were about to pull his foot off. All of a sudden, the gasoline tank exploded, covering him with flames. We were, unable to get near him then. I'll never forget his cries." McConniell was not removed until attaches of the J. Avery Bryan company, whose ambulance was summoned, reached the scene. A large pole was procured, and the tractor was pried off McConnell's body. The flames were leaping more than ten feet into the air then, one of the ambulance attaches said. The body was charred beyond recognition. Funeral services for McConniell will be held at 3 o'clock this afternoon from the Shiloh Baptist church, near Lineville. The Rev. Mr. Ray will officiate. Interment will be in the Shiloh cemetery. He was a Mason and Shriner, belonged to the lodge at Cragford, Ala. Surviving are his widow, parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank McConniell, of Malone, Ala.; one brother and five sisters. The body will be taken to Lineville by the J. Avery Bryan company. Additional Comments: Death Cert: Name Emory G.
