Ashland Progress
John Robert Mellon, age 71, passed away Tuesday night, April 12th, in Clay 
County Hospital, following a heart attack suffered two weeks previously. Funeral 
services are today, April 14th, 2 o'clock, at the Olive Branch Baptist Church, 
where he is a member. Rev. H. T. Tapley officiated, assisted by Elder B. Finley 
and Rev. A. O. Burdette. Interment was in the church cemetery. Survivors include 
his wife, Mrs. J. R. Mellon; one daughter, Miss Grace Mellon; two sons, Roy of 
Ashland and Ottis of Birmingham; and three grandchildren. Active pallbearers 
were nephews: Wendell, Alvin, Clide, Ray and Lavelle Elliott, and Jimmy Pogue. 
Honorary pallbearers were the deacons of the Olive Branch Church: Ethridge Moon, 
Morgan Tomlin, Morris Willis, Joe Gibson, Roy McCollum, Brewster Birchfield, and 
Stell Young.
