B. Smith, was shot and killed Thursday night of last week by Jake Bell, also colored. The shooting occurred in the home of Arthur Moseley at about 9 o'clock Thursday night. At the time of the killing, it is said that Arthur Moseley was remonstrating with Jake Bell about using profane language in the presence of the former's grandmother, "Aunt Judy" Moseley, who is an old negro woman more than 80 years of age who has a strain of Indian blood in her veins and who speaks the Cherokee language fluently. Prior to the killing Jake Bell had been raising a rough house which caused the family of Arthur Moseley to appeal to the white people of the community for protection. After Jake Bell had been called away from Moseley's house where he was raising a great disturbance, he returned and did the shooting. The defendant is now in jail at Ashland and his preliminary trial is set for next Monday before Justice Miller.
