J. H. Murphy, a farmer who sided about two miles east of Ashland, was snuffed out by a gunshot wound, the load passing through his body and entering the wall of his home, it is said. While it appears from investigation that there was no eyewitness to the tragedy, it is generally thought to be a case of suicide. The shooting occurred a room of his home in which it seems he was alone, other members of the family his wife, daughter and son-in-law, occupying other rooms of the house. His gun was lying near him, also a note stating in substance that he was tired of living as he did and was killing himself. The note gave instructions as to how he was to be buried and also advising his wife as to the care of her money and requesting that his mother's picture be placed in his coffin. Members of the family said he had been acting strangely for several days. Others who knew him well have remarked that his demeanor recently indicated that he was not normal Mr. Murphy came here from the West some years ago and had lived a quiet life on the farm. He was considered a very thrifty farmer. He is survived by his wife and one daughter. His remains were buried in Shiloh cemetery Sunday afternoon.
