She was the mother of 9 children, 5 girls and 4 boys. She also raised an orphan child. Her husband was killed in the battle of Shiloh April 7, 1862. She joined the Baptist church at the age of 14 years and from then until the death angel came her life was a beacon light to all who knew her. She leaves many friends together with her children and grandchildren to mourn her loss. She died at the home of Brother J. M. Hardy, who married her daughter and where she lived for a number of years and was loved and cared for by tender hands. Dear children, while your mother is gone from you, may you rejoice at the thought of meeting her again in the home, sweet home of God. At the time of Sister Payne's death, she was a member of Delta church, and while death came suddenly, she wrapped herself in the mantle of faith and lay down to pleasant dreams. What a blessed assurance to know that our loved ones crossed that dark and mysterious river without fear and doubt. Her pastor, S. J. Ingram.
