Payne was brought to the old home community for burial Sunday. Rev. Robt Ingram officiating, assisted by Rev. Woodward and S. J. Ingram. Mr. Payne was born in Cherokee county but came to Clay County at the age of 18 and remained here till three years ago when he and his wife went to Birmingham to live with their sons who are in college in that city. A large concourse of friends had gathered at the Mt. Moriah church to see and hear the last farewell of a man they used to admire and respect. Many tributes of praise of his good life came from numbers of friends who had gathered on this occasion. He lived to be 71 years of age and leaves five children and the dear wife in sad bereavement of his untimely going. Mr. Payne lived in Lineville one year that he might give the youngest child the privilege of finishing school here. Then going to Birmingham where the other, Rev. Lowell Payne was attending Howard College. Indeed, a good man has gone for we have never heard ought against him.
