Powell was born only a few miles from Lineville April 8th, 1855, and died at his home not far from where he was born Dec 25th, 1908, in the 54th year of his age. Bro Powell was baptized when about 15 years old and lived a smooth Christian life to the end. He was married to Miss Sophronia Pope, Feb 23rd, 1879. By this union they were blessed with seven children: six daughters and one son; six of whom are living. Three of the daughters are married, Mrs. Mollie Coleman, Mrs. Alva DeVaughan and Mrs. Flora Taylor. Misses Eula, Pearl and Thomas are with their mother. The children are dutiful and pleasant in the home. Bro. Powell was an exceptionally good man in all of the relations of life. He was a plain and unpretending man and died respected and loved by all who knew him. Just the like of Wiley Powell we do not often meet. Peace be to his memory. He was laid to rest in the burying grounds of Shiloh Baptist church in the presence of a large assembly of relatives and brethren, the writer conducting the last sad service, assisted by Rev W.T. Davis. Farewell, Bro. Powell, till we meet in the mighty beyond in our father's home. Affectionately, Your old friend, Jno P. Shaffer.
