Ashland Progress
On last Friday afternoon his many friends and relatives were shocked by the 
announcement of the sudden death of Mr. R. D. Ray which occurred at his home 
five miles west of Ashland. It is said that Mr. Ray appeared to be in excellent 
health and spirits while in conversation with some of his neighbors not more 
than an hour before his death.
He was in his pasture looking after some stock when he fell apparently dead. A 
negro who was with him spread the alarm and his family and friends carried him 
to his home, but his life was gone before the hastily summoned physician reached 
him. His death was thought to be due to a stroke of apoplexy. Mr. Ray was a 
lifelong citizen of the county and belonged to a large and well-known family.
At the reunion of his father's family held annually at his home six brothers and 
two sisters together I with children, grandchildren and great grandchildren to 
the number of about 200 gather. Of the members of his own family, eight survive 
him, a wife, one son and six daughters: He was born March 25th, 1851, and was 
therefore about 61 years of age. Mr. Ray was a man of generous impulses, steady 
habits and a kind and hospitable disposition. He had filled the various 
relations of life as husband, father, brother and friend and leaves behind him 
an enduring monument of good report. The funeral services were held at Mt. Zion 
Primitive Baptist church of which he had been a loyal and consistent member for 
twenty-five years.
