This is a true murder of the most outrageous type, and the extreme penalty the law should be meted out to him. Nov 7, 1879 James Rice, who was put in jail at this place on the 29th ult., for the crime of giving medicine to his stepdaughter, to produce an abortion, kept up a considerable noise for a awhile, and on Friday, morning when the Jailor. Wesly J. Gable carried up his breakfast to the prisoner, he saw the trap door of the Dungun open, and decided something was wrong, and thought the prisoner had made his escape. Mr. Gable called to a gentleman nearby and entered the jail and found the prisoner bad bung himself. He had made fast one corner of his blanket to the staple in the floor, and tied the other around his neck, and then dropped himself off into the Dungeon below. He was dead when he was found. An inquest was held in the evening, and the Jury found that he came to his death by hanging himself.
