Ashland Progress 
On Sunday, Jan. 21, the Death Angel visited the home of Mr. Mrs. Lewis Rice and 
took away their dear little Ralph, age 7 and a first grader at Mellow Valley 
school. Funeral services were held at Motley Monday.

[Elwood Rice] Ashland Progress Sep 28, 1923:
Boy Smothered to Death in Cotton News reached Ashland from Sikesville Thursday 
that a little seven-year-old son of Louis Rice, was smothered to death 
Wednesday. From reports it seems that he was playing in a pile of cotton and had 
dug out a hole therein. When found he was in the hole, dead with his head 
pointing downward.
