Ashland Progress
Henry F. Smedley, one of the old and highly esteemed residents of the Mellow 
Valley community, died a few days ago after a lingering illness. He was about 81 
years of age and was never married. One brother, Noah Smedley, and two sisters, 
Mrs. J.H. Leftwich, and, Mrs. Amanda Gooden, survive him. Funeral services, 
conducted by Rev. Tapley, Judge Garrison and W.B. Nolen, were held at County Line 
Baptist church of which he was one of the most loyal, consistent and faithful 
members.
