Clay County Advance
Washington Cyrus Smith was born in South Carolina October 30th, 1816; moved with 
his father when as small boy to Troupe County, Georgia, and soon after his 
marriage to Miss Emily Humphries, moved to Chambers County, Alabama. In 1859 he 
moved to Randolph County, Alabama which is now Clay, near Lineville. The deceased 
in early manhood united with the Missionary Baptist church and was a consistent 
member of this church until his death, for eleven years he left without a 
companion, his wife having preceded him to the better land, and during this time 
he lived with his children. After several months suffering which kind and 
affectionate hands could not alleviate, he passed quietly and peacefully to his 
final reward on Dec. 4th, 1896...........C.J. Bentley
