Steed, the subject of this sketch, was born in Montgomery County, North Carolina, Sept 30, 1823. While quite young he moved to the State of Georgia ana a little later to Talladega County Ala. On Jan. 23, 1851, he returned to Georgia, and resided until 1871. when he returned to Alabama and located near Idaho, in Clay County, where he remained until his death, which occurred Nov. 22, 1902. He was married Jan. 23, 1851, to Miss S. E. Bonner, of Carroll County, Ga. To them were born nine children, one of whom preceded him to the Better Land. His wife and eight children still survive to mourn his loss. He was devoted to his family, and amid the trials of reconstruction days he provided a liberal education for his children. He joined the M. E. Church, South, when eleven years of age He took great interest in all affairs of the church. He was a steward of the church forty years and during this long stewardship only missed two or three quarterly meetings. He was trustee of the church until his death. His seat was rarely ever vacant. When called upon he would lead in prayer. Indeed he was the recognized father of Sardis Church, where for over thirty years he held his membership and where he was laid to await the second coming of his Master. He was sick for several weeks. During this time he conversed freely concerning his condition. He arranged for his funeral services with the calmness of a business transaction. When asked if he was ready to die, he said, in his accustomed quiet tone. "Oh, yes" His was a peaceful death. There was not a struggle, but calmly as the setting sun he passed into the presence of Him who doeth all things well. J. C. Craig Ashland, Ala., Dec. 16,1902.
