Sister Matilda Stephens, to that beautiful home above prepared for the redeemed. Sister Stephens was born in Elbert County, Georgia, on Feb 6, 1820, and at the time of her death was 89 years, 10 months and 14 days old. She was married to Jerry Stephens in August 1842, moved to Alabama in 1847 and to the home where she died in 1849. She was the mother of ten children 7 boys and 3 girls, 5 living and 5 dead. Dr A. R. Stephens was the only child living with her at the time of her death. But her niece, Miss Azzoo Stephens, who lived with her nearly 20 years together with the Doctor loved and cared for her as though she had been a child. She joined the Baptist church in her early life at Flat Creek church in Georgia and in 1863 was in the organization of Delta church of which she was a member at the time of her death. Her life was always full of sunshine and cheer, although she was afflicted for a number of years. But she looked forward to the time when she would cross the mystic river and, join loved ones in the spirit world. And we mourn to say goodbye, dear mother, for we feel that a precious one from us has gone A voice we loved is still. A place is vacant in that home that never can be filled. Her pastor, S.J. Ingram.
