Clay Co., Ala., Aug. 24th. 1887. He was married in the prime of life to Miss Helen Howie, daughter of Rev. T. H. and Mrs. Louiza Howie. He was a successful merchant of this place (Delta), strictly honest, upright, and fair in all his dealings with man. He was a good neighbor, kind and accommodating in every way. When he liked a man, he liked him. and when he didn't like a man, he didn't like him and generally said so. He never joined any church. He was sick but a few days not quite a week. He said during his illness "I do wonder what I have been doing all my life, that I have not been getting ready for dead." Oh, how great a wonder it is indeed that some people will not see life in its true light till death gets in sight. He expressed great desire to get well that he might do something for Jesus." Reader if you are not on the Lord's side, if you are not doing something for Jesus, take warning from this, and do something. He paid the day before he died. "I have been looking for Jesus all day to take me off of this bed". Those that ministered to him in his last expiring moments me fully satisfied that there was a change of heart, and that he has gone safely home to Heaven. He leaves a very young wife and a little babe, (girl) many relatives and a host of friends to mourn their loss. Let us hope that our loss has been his treat and eternal gain. The believed have our prayers, that the Lord may comfort them. Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord. A Friend Additional Comments: He is buried in the Stephens Family Cemetery Clay County.
