H. F. Stephens, blacksmith, of Delta. Clay county received injuries that resulted in his death at 7:10 o'clock at local hospital and J. U. Bogg and J. T. Sasnett, were painfully injured. McBride King, alleged driver of the death car, was arrested last night by Chief of Police O. P. White and Detectives Smith and Deason and lodged in the city Jail on a charge of driving an automobile while intoxicated, violating a traffic ordinance, and being drunk in a public place. It is understood that a warrant charged manslaughter will be served on King by county officials when he is released from the city Jail. King was arrested at the residence on Wilmer Avenue where he was boarding, following a city, wide search staged by officers and sivllian. Witnesses state that King was driving his car northward on Noble Street and struck the three men in front of the Noble, street Motor company building. No eyewitnesses to the accident could be found this morning, although several told of seeing the men lying in the street after having been struck by the car. Stephen's skull was crushed when he was thrown to the pavement, and he died without regaining consciousness. His body was sent to Delta this morning and funeral and interment will take place there Thursday afternoon. He was fifty years of age. Boggs, who was a companion of Stephens and said to be a resident of Delta, also was severely bruised and lacerated about the face. His condition was reported as satisfactory by hospital attaches this morning. Sasnett. who is a resident of Anniston. was discharged from the hospital after having his injuries examined and treated by physicians. It is stated that King has been residing to Anniston for only a short period of time and is employed part time at the Southern Manganese plant. His home is in Montgomery, it is said. It was rumored that he was connected with the King-Wheeler Motor company, but this was unfounded as it was learned that McBride King is not related to either J. F. King and E. D. King, who operates the motor company. Merrill and Allen have been engaged as counsel for the accused man and announced this morning that, they were undertaking to make bond of $600 for the charge against him in the city court. These cases are set to tried tomorrow morning.
