Ashland Progress
Lenward Smith, 34, Delta Rt. 1, farmer was in Clay County jail Tuesday charged 
with murder in the slaying of another Delta resident, Eulas Summerlin, age 5O, 
according to Sheriff D. C. Little. Smith reported that he and Summerlin were 
fishing on the Tallapoosa River in Randolph County near their home when they 
became engaged in an argument. He told the Sheriff that they were in an 
abandoned house and Summerlin struck him seven times, I only struck him once, 
Smith said. We were the best of friends he said, and I had no intention of 
injuring him. The incident occurred early Sunday morning, and Summerlin died 
Monday morning at Clay County Hospital. Smith is being held by authorities of 
Randolph County, where he will stand trial. Funeral services were held for Mr. 
Summerlin August 4th at Shiloh Delta, conducted by Rev. B. W. Mathews and Eld. 
B. B. Finley, Blair in charge. Survivors are his mother, two brothers and one 
sister, Pallbearers were Frank Ingram, Paul Haynes, John Floyd McCollough, S. J. 
McCollough, Jake Daugherty and H. W. Daugherty.
