Ashland Progress
Thomas Clark Twilley was born January 14th, 1839, and died January 4th, 1926, at 
the home of his son-in-law, W. R. T. Knight, of the Mellow Valley community. His 
death was due to injuries sustained by a fall. He suffered only a few days and 
was a very patient sufferer, never murmuring or complaining, but took it all as 
his lot in life. Realizing that he was approaching death he was in the spirit of 
the Master, submissive and resigned. Uncle Tom, as he was familiarly called, was 
a man of quiet and unassuming ways. His prime characteristics were sincerity, 
cheerfulness and faithfulness to obligations. He was born in Clay County, 
Alabama, where his life was spent, with the exception of three years spent in 
the Confederate army. He enlisted as a soldier in the Civil war in the year 1862 
and was honorably discharged in 1865. He knew the hardships of a soldier's life 
during the war, and the trials and struggles through the days of reconstruction. 
In 1861 he was married to Miss Sarah Spivey. To this union were born ten 
children, eight of survive him, four sons and four daughters, two children 
having preceded him to the grave in infancy. Funeral services were conducted by 
Rev. T. D. Dawkins and interment was made in the County Line cemetery. The 
funeral was attended by a large congregation of relatives and friends. To the 
bereaved widow and children, we extend our; sincerest sympathy and commend them
