Patterson was cut about the head and face, and there was a knife found in the dead man's hand, The place showed signs of a scuffle, and three whiskey bottles, one containing some whiskey, were reported found near the scene. Patterson came on to Ashland between midnight and day and had the night watchman call up the sheriff to whom he confessed doing the shooting and surrendered. He said that there were two other persons at the scene of the killing, but he didn't know who they were. Additional Comments: Note: His marker in the Mt. Ararat Cemetery is dated Dec 27, 1923.
