D. Waits, a well-known citizen of Ashland and operator of a grist mill and crushed was fatally hurt in a shocking manner Tuesday morning. While attempting to put some dressing on a belt of his machinery he in some way was struck in the face and thrown backward against the floor, causing a bad wound on his head, and doubtless injuring him internally. He was given immediate surgical attention, but never regained consciousness and died during the night following. The tragic occurrence caused considerable excitement and universal sorrow throughout the town and community. The deceased is survived by his wife and two daughters. One of his daughters, Mrs. W. H. Allen, resides in Washinging City and upon being informed of the tragedy, started at once to Ashland, but did not arrive in time for the funeral. The funeral service was held at County Line Wednesday afternoon.
