The fatal shots are alleged to have been fired by Blake Steed, a young white man who resides at Lineville, where he is prominently connected. The trouble occurred near the north-west corner of the square about the time the crowd was returning from the night exhibit of Haag's show. Details are meager, but it is reported that the shooting followed a quarrel in which the negro is said to have cursed Steed. One ball went through the negro's body in the region of the stomach, and another entered higher up and is thought to have pierced the lungs. Steed came in Wednesday night and gave up to the sheriff. Dec 17, 1919, Our Mountain Home: Blake Steed was tried in the circuit court here last week on a charge of murder in that first shot and killed a negro, Albert Weaver, on the streets of Ashland in October. The testimony the negro used some very vile epithets and threatened Steed before he shot him. The jury acquitted him. Steed and the negro were both ex-soldiers of the late war.
