On October 4th, 1885, he fell from a tree injuring his back to such an extent as to cause complete paralysis of the lower limbs. He was never off of his bed only as he was assisted by someone and placed in a wheelchair, in which he could move himself about in the house. He had good use of his body and arms, and with such tools as he could use with his hands while sitting in his chair, he could make anything he choose. A more brilliant mind was never possessed by anyone with the same limit of training. During the whole time of his afflictions, he seemed to bear everything patiently und was contented with his lot. In his last sickness he expressed a willingness to die and had his sisters and friends to sing the following song which was a favorite of his........
