After her father was murdered, she and her siblings became the wards of Thomas Carpenter. She later married Thomas's son, James "Warren" Carpenter. Together they had the following children: Lydia Elizabeth; Mary Ann; Sarah Abigail; Marthena Candis; Mary Jane; Zachariah Thomas; David Harlan; Emily Caroline; and James Warren Jr. "Bud."
