Mrs. B. A. Harris has been appointed as chairman for fund raising. She is soliciting contributions of Labor and materials from those who have these to give, as well as money from others. The number of people attending services has grown to such an extent during the last few months, Mrs. Harris states, that they became enthusiastic over having a permanent place to worship. A lot has been purchased near the Black cemetery. Rev. Royall Callaway has given time for the general oversight of the program of this church work, beginning the second Sunday in June. He organized a prayer Meeting for each Wednesday evening at 7 o'clock. This service is well attended, says Mrs. Harris, and the members are deeply indebted to Rev. and Mrs. Callaway. A Sunday School jwith an enrollment of seventy-two is steadily growing. There was a Daily Vacation Bible School taught by Miss Mary Parsons sent from the trained staff of Baptist Workers from Montgomery. A revival has just closed with an increase of fourteen members. Twelve came for baptism and two by letter. Preaching was by Rev. W. T. Edwards, a Baptist District Worker, Rev. R.H. Carter and Rev. Royal Callaway. Homer Jones led the singing. Martha Jean Norton, Mrs. Callaway, Mrs. Paul Merrill and Tommy Howell Ross played the organ which was rented from the Forbes Piano Company. Mrs. Harris stresses the fact that this new church to be built on land settled long ago hopes to receive contributions from former residents and others who have relatives buri ed at the Black Cemetery. To the business men and others here she wishes to bring the need for concrete for flooring, nails, roofing, windows, doors and other materials. Checks should be made to Mrs. B. A. Harris states, "We beg all to give liberally in order that the people of this community may be able to 'raise up' and walk in the name of Jesus Christ." She listed dona tionsalready made and states that several subscribers have promised a second gift. They are, Mrs. B. A. Harris $50.; Tom Phillips, $50; Forney Phillips $50; Noah Philips $50; Jim Philips $25; Josie McDonald $25; W B. Merrill $25; P. J. Merrill, $25; J. T. Beason $25; Homer Jones $25; Leo R. Jones, Rev. Royal Callaway $25; Rev W. T. Edwards $25; Lebus Casey $5; J. C. Mims, $25; Dave Philips $15; Arthur Durham $15; Mrs. Carl Dryden $5; Leslie Watts $35; Grady Boyd $5; O. C. Street $1; Reid Campbell $2; W. T. Austin $5; H. L. Hunt $2; Woodrow Gossage $1; Clyde Harlin $2; S.R. Thrower $10; Ruth Brimer $10; Mr. Graham $1; Mr. and Mrs. Garlan Gay $25. The building lot was purchased. Cleburne News Jun 08, 1950: Formal approval and organization of Calvary Baptist church was accomplished last week with adoption of the church covenant. The program opend with music led by Herman Henry accompani ed by Mrs Joe Johnson. A prayer was offered by the Rev. Horace Sheffield who was followed by the Rev. Cole Skelton. Dr. W. T. Edwards explained the service and The Rev. L. C. Allen told the reason for organizing the new church. The council was composed of H. R. Carter, Arch T. Warmack, L. C Allen, Y. B. Wood, R. F. Genter, H. L: Sheffield, W. I. Edwards and H. L.Henry. The Rev Cole Skelton, pastor of the Calvary Mission was named to remain as pastor of the church. Rev Skelton was also elected county wide worker by the Cleburne Associational Executive committee. A Howard College ministerial student will take over Rev. Skelton's duties at Calvary Church when he is required to be out in the county. Surveyed by Linda Hutchins. July 2006 The Black Cemetery is located in Section 9, Range 10 E, Township 16 S on Bedwell Street in Heflin, Cleburne, AL. The cemetery is 1.6 acres in size. For a number of years this cemetery has been assumed to have belonged to the Calvary Baptist Church, adjacent to the cemetery. However the cemetery has always been privately owned. The Black Cemetery was originally established by the Black Family who were early pioneers in Cleburne County. However there is no documentation that any early members of the Black family are buried here. The cemetery has been in the Davero Phillips family for a number of years. Recorded in the Probate Office, Cleburne County, AL in October of 1993 (fische 290 B13) the name "Black Cemetery" was officially changed to "Forest Hills Cemetery" by the then members of the Board of Trustees. Research of the known burials in this cemetery shows that everyone buried in this cemetery is related in some way. I estimate there are 150 unmarked graves in this cemetery.
