T. Ayers of Delta, Route 1. has a muzzle-loading rifle that came to him from one of his grandfathers, it has been well preserved. He has a large wooden shoe that his brother sent from France during the World War. We reached the conclusion that it was about a size ten. The bottom of the shoe has a leather sole and heel. In the sole and heel are steel cleats to aid in walking. The reason for the leather soles, we reasoned, was for protection against excessive wear when the steel cleats wore down or to pad the shoe against shock. Mr. Ayers, little grandson was very much taken up with an old dinner horn his grandfather used before the War Between the States. The grandson asked him to blow on it repeatedly until he was almost out of breath. The horn was used by Mr. Ayers and his friends during boyhood to call hunting dogs. Additional Comments: The grandfather of Wilson Thaddues Ayres mentioned above is John Wilson Currie. The brother mentioned above is J. Irvin Ayres killed in WWI.
