A large number of delegates are in attendance. __ At a recent convention of the Barbour (AL) county Confederate Veteran's, the following officers were elected: S.H. Dent, Commandant A.H. Merrill, First Lieutenant E.L. Graves, Second Lieutenant C.F. Massey, Third Lieutenant Rev. H.D. Moore, Chaplain From Lieutanant Graves it was learned that eleven of its members have passed over the river within the last twelve months. ______ Mr. A.J. Simmons has been suffering with asthma for several days but is able to be up now. __ Mrs. C.D. Richardson and children of Virginia, visited the family of Mrs. J.C. Osborn in the city this week. __ Mrs. John Tolleson has been quite sick with lagrippe for several days but is improving slowly. Her many friends wish for her a speedy recovery. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday, May 12, 1900 The gold mines of Cleburne will be developed this year as never before. __ Mrs. W.A. Porter is spending this week at the bedside of her daughter, Mrs. S.S. Howell who is quite sick. __ Mrs. C.F. Carruth spent yesterday with her mother, Mrs. John Denman, near Beasons Mills, who has been quite sick for several days. __ I.B. Zaner, son of Mr. and Mrs. S.C. Zaner, who has been in the U.S. Army in Porto Rico for the past eighteen months, came home yesterday. He wa a member of the Fifth Cavalry, stationed near Ponce. He received an honorable discharge and will remain in Alabama. __ The Post Office at Hightower in this county was robbed last Friday night, the robbers getting $49.74 in money and stamps. The post office was kept in the store of Wiggins & Snow which was also robbed of 11 suits of clothes, 5 pair of shoes, and many other articles. Total value of money, stamps and goods taken was $175. There is no clue as to the guilty parties. __ Major Sam Wallace, receiver of the Pinetucky Gold Mines, sold the mines at public sale Monday at Edwardsville to Messr. Schlappi and York of West Superior, Wis. These mines are the richest in this section of Alabama adn much of the previous metal has been taken from them. Tuesday morning a company was formed for the purpose of developing and working these mines. Fred York is president of the company, A.L. Schlappi is secretary and treasurer. A force of hands have been put to work getting the property in shape for work. New and improved machinery will be used in working the mine and the company feels confident the mines will be made profitable under their management by the improved methods of mining. __ The registration books for the Federal and State elections will be opened Monday morning May 7. The State election will be held the first Monday in August and the Federal election in November. The books will be open til the 20th day of May. Those who fail to register in that time and those who did not register at the last State election, will be barred from voting at the State and Federal elections, though you may register on the day of the election. Hood Beat 15 - Abraham Neff ____ NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday, May 19, 1900 Atlanta will witness on July 19 and 20 next, a reunion of survivors, both Federal and Confederate, of the battle of Peachtree Creek. It has been decided as one of the features to give a barbecue in the trenches around the battlefield where the veterans met in battle thirty-six years ago. __ At the residence of the bride's parents in Edwardsville, Mr. A.H. Glasgow and Miss Jennie Stephens were united in marriage at 8 p.m. lsat Sunday by Rev. J.C. Midyett. It was a quiet, sensible wedding a matter of business rather than show. Mr. Glasgow is too well known to need commendation. Miss Stephens is one of Edwardsville's most charming young ladies, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Stephens. May long life and usefulness be the sequel of the union. __ J.L. Stephens, Tie Inspector for the Southern Railway Co. has moved his family to Heflin, occupying the Moore fesidence on Spring street. __ J.W. Norton is quite sick with congestion of the stomach. __ I.P. Fowler of Duncan, I.T., who has been visiting his nephews, E.W., T.I. and J.D. Landers, in the city for several days, has gone to Atlanta to spend a few days before returning home. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday, May 26, 1900 The Dispensary at this place was broken into last Saturday night and several bottles of whiskey was stolen. The cash register ws taken from the dispensary to the railroad, a distance of about 100 yards, rifled of all the cash it contained, about $2.50. Stephenson's barber shop was also burglarized, the thieves taking two razors.
