Harris and children are visiting her parents at Lithonia, GA, this week. __ Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Evans of Blossburg, after spending several days with his parents near town returned home Monday. They were accompanied on their return by MIss Peggie Evan who will remain there several days. __ Thos. Carruth has accepted a position with the Anniston Mercantile Co. and will travel parts of Randolph, Calhoun and Cleburne. The Mercantile Co. is a good firm and they are indeed fortunate in securing Mr. Carruth as a traveling representative. __ W.J. Fowler of Hightower, who recently had his saw mill and ginnery destroyed by fire is building a gin house and has ordered a new and complete ginning outfit and will b ready for business this season. The loss recently suffered by Mr. Fowler was a severe one but he is a man of great energy and business ability and will soon be in shape again. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday, September 15, 1900 Born to Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Wager last Sunday a girl. __ D.W. Vaughan has recovered from an attack of the fever. __ R.W. O'Keefe and family of Canyon, Texas are visiting his mother, Mrs. S.E. Bell, in the city. __ Mrs. Nonia Dempsey of Ackerman, Miss., is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.P. Bedwell in the city. __ Mrs. M.F. McMurray and children of Bear Creek, Franklin County, are visiting Mrs. S.E. Bell in the city. __ W.O Black has moved his family from Oxanna to this city and are occupying the Young house on Ross Street. __ Dr. and Mrs. W.A. Neal are in the city on their return from Banksville, GA where they were called by the death of Dr. Neal's father. __ J.A. Owens returned home Thursday evening from Banksville, GA where he attended the burial of Mrs. Owens' father, Mr. T.A. Neal. Mrs. Owens will remain in Georgia a few weeks. __ The friends of Dr. W.A. Neal and Mrs. J.A. Owens will be pained to learn of the death of their father, Mr. Thos. A. Neal which occurred at his home near Banksville, GA last Sunday of continued fever. Mr. Neal was 72 years old. __ Charity Morris, an old negress, died at the Pauper's Home near Ai last Sunday night of old age. She was probably the oldest person in the county. Persons who had known her for many years say she was more than 100 years old. __ Mrs. Smith of Piedmont, after spending a month in the city with her daughter, Mrs. R.B. Baird, returned home Monday accompanied by Mrs. Baird. __ Albert Brown is burning a kiln of 100,000 brick. __ J.A. Morris of Arbacoochee, brought the first bale of cotton to Heflin Wednesday. The bale weighed 558 pounds and was bought by Atkins & Owens for about 11 cents. Mr. Morris is a good farmer and for the past three years has been among the first to bring cotton to Heflin. Jere Beason brought in a bale Thursday. It was sold for 10.40. Mr. Beasin is also a good farmer and can always be found up to the front when it comes to producing the necessaries of life as well as making cotton. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday, September 22, 1900 Mr. Sam Borders of Choccolocco, while superintending the building of crib on his place on Thursday, and while assisting in raising a log, it fell on him breaking his neck. Death was instantaneous. Mr. Borders was a prominent stock raiser of Calhoun County and had many friends in Cleburne who will learn of his death with regret. His remains were interred at Harmony Church near Choccolocco yesterday after an impressive funeral conducted by Rev. John A. Scott of this city. __ Born to Mr. and Mrs. Wash Howle, Wednesday, a girl. __ W.T. Loveless of McCalla, ALa., is visiting his sister, Mrs. W.G. Porter in this city. __ Mr. Marcus Gillespie of Boaz, is visiting his Uncle, W.F. Stephenson in the city this week. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday, September 29, 1900 Briggs and Gilbert have closed down their gold mines near Arbacoochee, indefinitely. __ Lillian, the two year old baby of Mr. and Mrs. C.D. Richardson died at their home in East Birmingham last Monday and was buried in the cemetery at this place Tuesday morning.
