Acting on the advice of Dr. Williams, Mayor Hubbard has stationed guards around the house and there is no danger of a spread of the disease. __ Mrs. Alberta Carruth, wife of Thos. Carruth, died at the home of her mother, Mrs. J.C. Osborn, on Tuesday morning the 21st inst. after an illness of three days, the immediate cause of her death being heart failure. Her sudden death was a great shock to her family and friends, occurring as it did with so little warning. Her husband who was absent in Mississippi, and her brother in Chicago, knew of her indisposition but never thought of a fatal termination. Both arrived here Wednesday. The burial on Thursday. Mrs. Carruth was in the twenty-fourth year of her age. She was the idol of her family and her fidelity to friends was a conspicuous trait in her character. Pleasant in her associations, amiable in her disposition and filling her life with good deeds for the comfort and pleasure of others, she had endeared herself to many hearts in Heflin. The smile and cheerful words with which she always greeted those she met will be sadly missed by her best of friends, while in the home there is a depth of sadness fathomed only by the cords of tender love that bound her to the endearing affections of husband, the tender love of mother and the devotedness of sister and brother. How sad are these grief ladened hearts which weep in the bitterness of sorrow with them. Bertie has left her earthly home and gone to the better one where sadness, parting or death, can no more invade. ___ Ora Neal Zaner, born Feb 18, 1885, died of pneumonia January 23, 1902, at the home of her father S.C. Zaner Jr. in this city. Miss Ora was a member of the M.E. Church South, and her quiet life demonstrated the amiable qualities of heart. As a daughter, dutiful and affectionate, as a sister, devoted. Those who knew her were her friends and loved her for her virtues. In the fullest meaning of the term, she was a good girl. Many sorrowing friends mingle their tears of love and sympathy with those of the grief stricken family and will miss her sweet assocation. It is always sad to record the visitations of death, but it seems doubly so when it comes to one so young, upon whose youthful life the radiant sunshine of hope beamed, filling it with golden expectation of joyous life. Death, streching forth his icy hand has nipped with chilling frost the flower of hope and consigned it to the dreary cheerless grave, though it has not left those who loved her comfortless, for "hope looks beyond the bounds of time, when what we now deplore shall rise in full, immortal prime, and bloom to fade no more." ___ Jas. Loptien, of Fruithurst, father of Mrs. C.J. McCraven of this city, died suddenly Thursday morning. He was about 65 years old. __ Andrew Heard, a young man about 21 years old died at his house near Lecta, this county, of pneumonia, last Monday. He was a son of W.H. Heard of this place. The New Era extends sympathy to the bereaved ones. __ R. D. Beason, of near Beasons Mills, has been doubly bereaved this week by the death of two sons aged 15 and 13 years. They died of typhoid fever. Another member of the family is very ill of the same disease. The sorrowing family have many sympathizing friends in their deep distress and grief. __ The iron bridge across Tallapoosa river at Evans, three miles east of Heflin, was completed Wednesday and has been received by the commissioners. The bridge was built by the Virginia Bridge & Iron Co. of Roanoke, VA and cost $2500. The bridge comes up well to the plans and specifications under which the contract was let. This is the first iron bridge in Cleburne and if it proves a profitable investment, which everyone believes it will be, others will be built as needed. The bridge will be a great help to the people of southeast Cleburne and if the road leading to Trickem Valley was put in good condition, Heflin's trade from that section would be greatly augmented. __ File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/al/cleburne/newspapers/gnw110newspape.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/alfiles/ File size: 7.6 Kb
