BRANNON The subject of this notice was born in Russell County, Alabama July 14, 1852 and died at his home in Iron CIty, Calhoun County, Alabama Feb 19, 1902. He was confined to his bed only about ten days. He died from tumor of the bowels. Drs. Bowcock of Anniston, Whiteside of Oxford and Hughes of Choccolocco performed a surgical operation on the day before he died, but too late to save him. His father moved to Cleburne County and settled on Tallapoosa river sometime in the fifties. In 1881 he was happily married to Miss Mollie Jones, the only daughter of the late Dr. Jones who resided for many years near Bell's Mill. He leaves a wife and seven children and performed well the duties of husband, father, citizen and left to his family one of the best improved homes and farms in this community. His example of industry and economy is eminently worthy of imitation. No citizen and neighbor will be missed more than he. His beloved family has the condolence and sympathy of the entire community. He is gone and we shall not soon see his like again. He was laid to rest in the Davisville cemetery followed by a large concourse of relatives and friends. Peace to his ashes. W.P. Howell Feb 25, 1902. ___ NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday, March 8, 1902 J.T. Zaner Jr. and Bailey Zaner. There has been some ill feeling between Bailey Zaner and brother Pad Zaner over the division of some property, for several weeks and they met in justice court room Monday morning and after a few words began to fight, they were separated however before either was seriously injured. Immediately after the difficulty, Elma and son S.C. Zaner, went home and returned with a rifle and together with his father started from the courtroom down the street and when in front of Evans Bros. and Co's store, discovered Bailey Zaner standing with his back to the street talking to some friends. Elma without warning shot him, the shot taking effect in the thigh. Dr. Harris dressed the wound and late reports from his bedside are that he is doing as well as could be expected. S.C. Zaner and Elma made bond for their appearance at a preliminary trial to be held in Edwardsville March 24th. __ LEGAL NOTICE - - Notice to Non-Resident County Court, Cleburne County, Alabama Anna B. Fuller wherever she may reside, is hereby notified of said attachment and the levy thereof as aforesaid. Witness my hand this 14th day of March 1902. M.C. Reese, Clerk ___________ NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday, March 22, 1902 CONTRACT AWARDED FOR FIRST BUILDING OF CONFEDERATE VETERANS" HOME Montgomery - March 21 - - A contract for the first building of the old soldier's home to be erected on land donated by Captain J.M. Falkner at Mountain Creek, was awarded to J.C. Greenwood yesterday. The home is to be composed of cottages and this contract is for one of these. Probably within the next day or two contracts for two other cottages will be awarded and the buildings will be erected as rapidly as possible. A considerable quantity of lumber has been donated by dealers and Captain Falkner said yesterday afternoon that as son as a cottage was completed it would be paid for in every instance. There has been no call for contributions so far and as so many have subscribed to the fund already, the committee having the matter in charge are very much encouraged and are confident that a suitable home will be furnished the old veterans of Alabama. The idea of cottages instead of one large building is a good one, as in case of fire, the entire home would not be destroyed, besides it would be more comfortable and home like where cottages are used. There are a number of old heroes who are now being cared for in the alms houses of the state and this class especially are delighted that they are to have a home of their own, supported by those for whom they fought. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday, March 29, 1902 The Anniston Hot Blast yesterday, Friday, contained the following which will be read here with sadness: " A telegram was received in the city yesterday by Mr. Collier Sansom stating that his sister, Mrs. B.M. Mrs. Bayol is remembered by the people of Heflin pleasantly, she made this city home, living with the family of her Uncle W.G. Milligan and was married here.
