W. Beason of Beasons Mills this county, came near losing his life at Buckalew bridge on Choccolocco creek last Saturday. He had started to Oxford and when he reached Choccolocco creek it was heavily swollen from the recent rains but he decided to try to cross anyway and drove in. His wagon and mules were swept off the bridge and his mules were drowned. Mr. Beason also was carried down the stream but swam ashore. The loss of the mules is a heavy one to Mr. Beason. __ Mrs. Clark, mother of Willand Perry Clark and Mrs. W.W. Scott, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Scott, in this city last Saturday night of heart failure and was buried Sunday afternoon. She was 67 years old. The sympathy of the people of Heflin is extended the family in their bereavement. __ A.J. Richardson, formerly of Heflin, died at his home near Chulafinne last Monday after a short illness of pneumonia. He was about 50 years old. A wife and several children survive him. Mr. Richardson was well known and highly esteemed by the people in this section of the county who join the family in sorrow at his death. __ Last Monday evening just before 6 o'clock, W.H. Owens was killed in the dispensary at Edwardsville by Garry Grice. There were no witnesses to the killing. It is supposed Owen went into the dispensary to make a purchase but having already bought a package that day was refused and that this brought on the trouble which resulted in his death. He was shot only once, the ball taking effect in the left breast just below the heart. Grice was arrested and placed in jail. He refused to make a statement. Mr. Owen was 35 years old. A wife and three children survive him. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday, April 12, 1902 Bailey Zaner died yesterday afternoon at 5 o'clock, the result of gunshot wound received on March 10th. He was about 35 years old. His funeral was held in this city this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock and his remains were laid to rest in the cemetery immediately after. To the aged father and grief-laden family the sympathy of the people is offered. __ Joseph A. Howell, son of E.S. and Ida L. Howell, died at the home of his parents at East Lake, Ala., on the 5th of April after an illness of two weeks of cerebral abscess. He was nine years old. His remains were brought here Sunday and interred in the Heflin cemetery Monday following. His death leaves a vacant chair in the home and casts a gloom of sadness over the hearts of loved ones, who, in their hour of deepest sadness can only say "thy will be done". We week because he has gone from us ne'er to return but know that he is safe with jesus who hath said "of such is the kingdom of heaven". To him death was only the reailzation of childhood's dream of heaven. ___ J.D. Campbell who was convicted of the murder of Arthur York in the county court last year and sentenced to life imprisonment has been granted a new trial by the supreme court. __ Rev. J.L. Freeman, of Gainesville, Texas, formerly presiding elder of this district M.E. Church, will preach at the M.E. Church tomorrow at 11 o'clock. __ The preliminary trial of Garry Grice charged with the killing of W.H. Owen in the dispensary at Edwardsville last week, was held at Edwardsville Wednesday. He was held to await action of grand jury in the sum of $800. bail. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday, April 26, 1902 We are pained to announce the death of Mrs. A.J. Norton which occured last Monday night at the home of her husband in this county. She had been confined to her bed for nearly a month and her death was not unexpected. She is survived by a large number of friends and family who have the sympathy of the people, in their bereavement. __ Thursday afternoon at the home of Rev. John A. Scott, Mr. A.F. Ford and Miss May Borders were married, Rev. Scott performing the ceremony. Miss Borders is one of Calhoun county's most charming young women. She is a daughter of Mrs. Mary Borders, relict of Abner Borders who was one of the most enterprising and progressive farmers in the famed Choccolocco valley. She is esteemed for her many noble traits of character and her numerous friends are congratulating Mr. Ford upon having won for a life companion so fair a bride. Mr. Ford is a popular engineer of the Southern and has been making Heflin his home for quite a while. He is a young man of honor and integrity and is universally esteemed.
