They were fined $100. each but the fine was reduced to $25. each and the sentence of 30 days imprisonment was deferred to the November term of court. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday, April 11, 1903 During a thunder storm at Bell Mills last Wednesday morning John Boman, an eight year old son of Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Boman as struck by lightning and instantly killed, and Mrs. Boman was severely shocked. The lightning struck a stove flue on John A. Brown's store house, demolishing it, ran down the stove pipe into the store and tore up the floor, thence under the house occupied by Mr. Boman. The family were in the east room of the house and were sitting around the fire when the stroke of lightning came. Mrs. Boman and Tom, an older son, were severely shocked and other members of the family slightly shocked. The son killed was a bright boy eight years of age and the friends of the family sympathize deeply with them in their inconsolable grief. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday, May 2, 1903 Mr. Lester Fowler visited our burg last week. __ Mr. and Mrs. Overton of Ranburne visited Mr. and Mrs. B.F. Snow recently. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday, May 9, 1903 DIED - -Miss Susie Henry, daughter of Mrs. Haley Henry, died in this city Thursday afternoon. Her death resulted from a tumor, after an operation by Dr. earnest of Atlanta and Drs. Williams, Wright, Johns and Reid of this county. __ J. S. Bartlett of Venus, Texas, formerly of this county, visited friends here this week. J.W. Hunnicutt, of Vick, Alabama a former Heflin citizen, spent Tuesday and Wednesday with friends here. __ W.A. Haley and W.G. Milligan attended the grand lodge meeting, Knights of Pythias, in Birmingham this week. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday, May 16, 1903 W. Jeffries, a freight conductor on Southern Railway was thrown from his caboose here early this morning and was seriously if not fatally injured. His skill was smashed, his body badly bruised and arm broken. He was carried to Atlanta on the passenger train this morning for medical attention. A message this afternoon stated he was living but there was little chance for recovery. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday, May 23, 1903 DIED - -Mr. W. Jeffries who was thrown from a train at this place last Saturday morning was carried to a hospital in Atlanta and died from the injuries Saturday evening. Mr. Jeffries was one of the most popular conductors on this division of the Southern and his tragic death is deeply deplored by all who knew him. __ Comments from the Editor of the Cleburne New Era: President Yerby in his address to the Alabama Press Association said: No newspaper man or woman knows why it is that the worst enemy that the paper has is theperson who contributes nothing to it's support; nor do we know how it comes about the the paper's most constant and harshly critical readers is the man who never subscribes; nor do we know why an editor is expected to publish long obituaries free of charge, extolling the virtues of one who never in his lifetime contributed to the paper's existence....There are lots of other things we do not know but it is useless to further enumerate..." ___ Mr. J.F. Stovall and Mrs. Nancy Allen were unitd in matrimonial bonds at Chulafinnee May 18, 1903, Rev. G.H. Bailey performing the ceremony. Some time ago, the same minister united Mr. Thos. Waits and Miss Inez Flemmons at Oakfuskee. The New Era congratulates both happy couples. __ CALDWELL LODGE of MASON's Passes Resolution on the DEATH of JOHN H. BELL The following resolutions were adopted by Caldwell Lodge on Thursday afternoon: At a regular communication of Caldwell Lodge No. 502, we, whose names are signed below were appointed as a committee to draft resolutions of respect in regard to the death of brother John H. Bell, who was born in Hall County, Georgia, June 5, 1829 and was made a Mason at Canton, in Cherokee County, Georgia in the year 1852, and; whereas it has pleased our Grand Master, to take brother Bell from this stage of action and from our midst on April 23, 1903 at Belltown, Ala; and whereas our intimate relation with him as a Mason renders it proper and right that we should place on record our very high apprecation of his services as a Mason and a man, spotless as Mason, embodying in his life and character the high principles of christian manhood coming out in his everyday life; Therefore be it resolved that in the death of Bro. John H. Bell, this Lodge has lost a brother whose life as a Mason was characteristic of faithfulness and fidelity...and be it resolved that this Lodge tenders its sympathy to the family and relatives of our deceased brother in their sad affliction. And be it resolved that the members of this Lodge wear the usual badge of mourning for thirty days. And resolved that these resolutions be entered upon the Minutes of this Lodge and that a copy of them sent to the family of the deceased brother, also a copy furnished th Cleburne New Era for publication.
