N.J. ROSS KILLED On last Thursday, a telegraphic dispatch announced that Capt. Newton J. Ross was dead, and that one of his tenants on his farm near Tallahassee, Florida had shot him causing his death. This telegram though meager in its details contained enough of said intelligence to cast a gloom over this entire community. Captain Ross was raised within three miles of this town, and the town is built on lands that were once all his and of which he owned at his death nearly or quite half. He had besides, two or three other large farms in this county and Calhoun county. His possessions in Florida are very valuable. It has been his custom for several years past to spend his winters on his farm in Florida and his summers among his many friends in this county. Capt. Ross was about 55 years old, a true democrat, and highly honorable in all of his dealings. There are many institutions and individuals in and around Heflin that fully attest his liberality, although he sounded no trumpet when he did his alms. He was never married. His immediate surviving relatives are Capt. John Ross, Mrs. Blackman and Mrs. Tumlin. __ Mrs. J. C. Taylor has moved back from Tallapoosa GA and will occupy the house next door to the New Era office. __ The five year old child of Mr. Story who lives on the Teague farm was severely burned last Tuesday. She was left at the house while her mother went a short distance away to do the family washing. The mother was soon alarmed by the screams of the little girl and ran to find her alive, but dangerously burned, her clothing afire. __ Lois, the little child of Mr. and Mrs. L.L. Herron came near being seriously burned a few mornings ago. She was standing before the fire with her gown caught on fire. She ran out of the house and was soon discovered by her mother who extinguished the burning clothes, causing serious burns to her hands in doing so. Fortunately the child had on flannel underclothes which prevented serious damages to her. ___ On last Monday night the wife and 12 year old son of Mr. Sweatman living near Zidonia in this county were shot down in his own house by unknown parties. The shooting was done with a double barrelled shot gun. Mr. Sweatman is an important witness in several revenue cases and it is suspected that the parties against whom he is witness did the shooting thinking it was Sweatman that they were shooting at. There is no clue to the perpetrators. The boy has since died, the mother is dangerously wounded. __ Mrs. Fred Wagener left here on last Thursday night for Middlesborough, KY to spend some time with her husband who is doing a large amount of contract work there. __ Mr. J.E. Daniel and family have been quite sick with lagrippe. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday, March 19, 1892 Quite a blizzard and snow storm struck us on last Thursday night that set the mercury to monkeying around zero. Peaches are likely all killed in the bud by the recent cold snap. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday April 2, 1892 Several of our citizens attended the burial of Mr. Garrett at Chulafinnee on last Tuesday. __ Miss Mamie Williams of Choccolocco is visiting her cousins Mrs. J.N. Swift and Miss Della Williams in town. __ Mr. E.S. Howell left here on last Wednesday for Atlanta where he will likely engage in house building for a time. __ Mrs. E.S. Swift is visiting her parents in Clay County. __ Fine corn whiskey can be had at J.B. Dunston's for $1.75 per gallon. Peach and apple brandy and old Holland Gin at bed rock prices, and sixx year old Baker Rye whisky. __ Mrs. J.C. Taylor of Heflin is agent for the sale of the great book of the life of Rev. Charles H. Spurgeon. The fact that this great man has left a living record of his devoted christian life equalled by few men, is sure to make a book about him early sought after. The book has the merit of selling at a reasonable price. Call on Mrs. Taylor and subscribe for one. __ DIED -- At his home in Chulafinee on Monday March the 28th, Mr. Wesley M. Garrett. He was born Sept 6th 1821 and was 71 years and 6 months old. He was married Feb 28th 1843 and had therefore lived with his wife who still survives him, nearly 50 years. For more than half a century he was a faithful member of the Missionary Baptist church. His life was an exemplary one, he met death with calm resignation, his only expressed regret being that he was sorry to leave his aged companion. He has a large circle of friends and relatives who mourn for him. He was buried with Masonic honors, being a Mason himself. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday, April 9, 1892 Mr. and Mrs. B.J.
