If they should find themselves called upon by the next grand jury to answer for their gross and ungentlemanly conduct, it need not surprize them. C.H. Lowery __ Mr. J.P. Barker, one of Cleburne's most properous and intelligent farmers came over from his home near Bells Mills on last Thursday, in company with Mrs. Jere Smith and Mrs. Timmons of Oxford, on their return from a visit at his home. __ Messrs. Noell and Stephenson, the contractors on the Methodist Church here, on going to work a few mornings ago found a half grown opossum that had taken up his abode in the infinished boxing of the church. They soon captured him and after marking him with a cap in the right ear and a slit in the left ear, turned him loose. __ Died - - at the home near Bell Town on the 31st of August, Mr. J.R.Davies Jr. of malarial fever, aged about 30 years. He was a member of the M.E. Church, a good citizen and highly respected. He leaves a wife and three children besides his aged father, Mr. J.R. Davies Sr., of our town to mourn his loss. __ About three years ago, Mr. A.J. Richardson of this place was employed at New Decatur, in excavating for the foundation of a residence on the plat of ground with a small mound several feet high. In digging into this, Mr. RIchardson found a clasp knife with a broad blade four inches long. On one side is stamped a Spanish inscription, probably the name of the manufacturer. The handle is curved at the closed end, resembling the handle of a surgeon's amputating knife. The wood of the handle was entirely gone but the metal portion is in a good state of preservation. It was perhaps lost by one of DeSoto's men in his celebrated ramble through that portion of the country over three centuries ago. __ On lat Sunday night, Messrs. J.M. Rogers and D.C. Thompson started to go from town to New Harmony to attend services being held there that night. That had a mule hitched to a cart and when near the shops of Mr. Chambers in town the mule became frightened and ran away throwing the two young men out and tearing the car to pieces. Mr. Rogers received an ugly gash in his forehead and was hurt in one of his hips. Mr. Thompson was cut in several places in the face and forehead making large and painful wounds. Fortunately neither of them received serious injury. __ Mr. A.W. Singleton is lying dangerously ill. __ Messrs. Hendon and Thrower have completed a new dam at their mill and are ready for work again. __ Mr. A.M. Herron who is employed in building trestles on the G.P. Railroad visited his brother Mr. L.L. Herron in town on last Saturday to Monday. __ Mr. Henry Blake, father of Mrs. Noell of this place, died at home in Clay County of apolexy last Monday. _____ On Monday the 21st inst., Major J.W. Wigginton died at his home at Kemps Creek in this county, of fever, after an illness of only a few days. He was for many years a very prominent citizen and an upright man, as husband and father, and was all that is embraced in the endearing term. His long life of nearly fore score years, was spent among those who will long cherish a kindly remembrance of him.
