At first it was thought that his horse had thrown him but upon a close investigation it is thought that foul play was done him, and the perpetrators of the deed may yet be found out and punished for their heinous crime. __ Mr. Charlie Gordon a fireman on a through freight train on the G.P. railroad was killed at Edwardsville on last Tuesday. He fell from the cars as they were moving and was run over and terribly mangled. His remains were sent to Oxford for burial. __ Mrs. E.A. Williams of Ashland has moved to Heflin and will settle here. We welcome all such additions to our new town. __ J.B Dunston has moved his saloon into the house occupied by G.W. Hall last year. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, January 19, 1893 Mr. J.H. Calahan and family have moved to Oxford. We regret to lose so good a citizen as Mr. Calahan from our town. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Saturday, February 25, 1893 J.R. Caldwell Esq. has accepted the position of bookkeeper in the popular house of McMurray Bros. where he will be glad to meet his many friends. __ The many friends of Mrs. J.W. Rogers will be grieved to learn of her death which occurred at her home near this city yesterday evening. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, March 16, 1893 Mr. J.R. Caldwell is on the sick list this week. __ Old newspapers suitable for wrapping paper for sale at this office. __ We are informed that Miss Birtie Perryman, sister to Mrs. J.F. Morgan, has opened a music class in this city. __ The jury in the case of the State vs. S.C. Zaner, of Heflin, returned a verdict of not guilty for the murder of W.B. Bell, after being out about three weeks. ___ NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, March 23, 1893 Married at the residence of W.U. Almon on last Tuesday, Mr. Welcher to Mrs. McAbee; W.U. Almon officiating. __ Mrs. S.I. Dorsey, formerly of Pinetucky, but now of Henderson, Kentucky, who has been visiting in this vicinity several days, returned home last night. __ Capt. C.C. Huckabee, an expert gold miner of Anniston, was in the city Monday, accompanied by a number of his men. They were on their way to Arbacoochee this county, on a prospecting tour. __ W.G. Isbelle, who is connected with the Crown Point Gold Mining company, located near Micaville, this county, was in the city Sunday and Monday enroute to Anniston on business. He showed us some samples which he was going to send to St. Louis, Mo., for analysis, which were of the finest quality. He informed us that a nother vein has just been discovered which is eight feet thick and is turning out exceedingly well. Mr. Isbelle is quite jubilent over the bright prospects. _____ NEWSPAPER Issue of May 4, 1893 We are reliably informed that the Pinetucky gold mines located about twelve miles south of Heflin is running in full blast and its proprietors are jubilant over its bright prospects. Another gold mine will be opened within 30 days, eight miles south of the city. A stock company composed of capitalist from the north are at the head of the enterprise. The Lucky Joe Gold Mining Company, so we are informed, are putting up houses and machinery and taking our ore. A ten stamp mill be in operation at the ine in a short time and then our readers will hear some good news. Mr. L.D. Phillips, an expert gold miner, who is superintendant says it is one of the richest mines he ever saw. ___ Mrs. O'Keefe of Colorado City, Texas, who has been spending the past week with the family of J.M. Atkins, returned hom last Monday. She was accompanied by Miss Dussie Bell who will spend the summer with her and from there they will take in the World's Fair. __ One last Wednesday evening one of Heflin's most promising young men joined hands with one of Iron City's fairest and noblest daughters. Mr. E.E. Stricklen was the fortunate man and Miss Ezzie Thompson the happy bride. These two popular young people joined hands and hearts at the residence of the bride's father, Mr. W. Thompson. Rev. D.A. Burns of this city officiated in the presence of an immense throng of eager and devoted friends. The ushers who preceeded the bride and groom were J.L. Yeatman and Miss Fannie Scarbrough, W.E. Striplin and Miss Elzie Thompson, sister of the bride. A fairer and sweeter bride was never led to the alter. On Thursday morning the happy couple together with a number of their friends boarded the 8:30 train and arrived here at 8:42. They were met with conveyances and from the depot they proceeded to take in the beautiful sights in and around Heflin, going first to the flower garden of Mrs. Mohon, thence to the river and Evans bridge and from there to the residence of the groom's father, Mr. Simon Stricklen. The New Era together with their many friends, and they are numbered by the score, wish the happy couple a long, happy and prosperous voyage over the sea of life. ___ James D. Landers, of Duncan, Indian Territory, arrived at this place last night. He will spend some time in the state. Dan speaks well of the Territory. __ Mrs. H.D. Landers has been very sick for some days but is convalescent. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of September 22, 1893 Born unto Mr. and Mrs. S.C. Zaner on last Tuesday night a fine ten pound girl. Mother and little daughter are doing well. ____ D.B. Hicks of the Hicks mica mines at Micaville is in the city this week preparing to make a large shipment of his mica. __ Born unto Mr. and Mrs. J.F. Wiggins of this city last night a fine girl. Mother and daughter are doing well. __ J.W. West of Cedartown, GA visited his brother J.T. West in the city the first of the week. __ Mrs. E.A. Williams, one of our most esteemed women, died at the residence of her son-in-law, J.N. Swift in this city Sunday night, September 17th. Mrs. Williams had been confined to her bed for several days with sickness but was thought to be improving at the time of her death. She leaves one married daughter and two single ones, Misses Della and Fannie, together with a host of other relatives and friends to mourn her death. The following of our citizens accompanied Mrs. Williams to her funeral at Lineville on last Tuesday: Mrs. H.G. Noell, W.A. Porter, wife and daughter, Misses Alice Owens and Lucy Woolbright, W.D.
