S.P. West of the Alabama Methodist Orphanage of Summerfield was in the city yestserday. __ The city authorities have given us a night policeman, and Mr. H.G. Noell is holding the place down, the right man in the right place. __ Mrs. Swanson, who has been visiting Mrs. B.J. Edmondson near this place for several days, returned to her home in LaGrange, GA on Tuesday last. __ Mr. Fred Wagner of Middlesboro, Kentucky was in the city last Thursday. He was on his way to Edmondson and Wagner's stock farm near this place to visit relatives and friends. __ You will find the prettiest line of millinery good ever brought to Heflin, at the store of Rolly Jenkins. The Misses Jenkins are always ready to accomodate you. __ The saw mill located one and one half miles from this city is now running at full capacity and it shipping the finest kind of lumber to all points every week. The mill is owned and operated by Mr. L.L. Coffee, an experienced saw mill man, and employs about twelve hands. __ W.G. Isabelle of the Crown Point Mining company of near Micaville, was in the city last Monday enroute to Anniston. He is highly elated over the bright prospects of the mines and showed us some of the precious metal which had been smelted. One piece was valued at $135. and is very fine. He informs us that all the mills inthe county are running and are paying well. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, May 11, 1893 Col. R.E. Merrill of the Pinetucky Gold Mining Co. was among us this morning. Mr. Merrill is an experienced miner and says htat the gold mines are doing all that could be wished for them. He also states that experts that are now at the mines say they are the richest they have ever seen, California not excepted. The Pinetucky district is located in the extreme north of Randolph county and is named after the principal mine in active operation. The Pinetucky mine shows good returns of free gold from panning tests. The Pinetucky was discovered in 1843 and worked in several places to water level by inexperienced miners. The vein is a true fissure in a granite formation and can be traced by the outcrop for a distance of two miles from north to south. At the surface it shows an average thickness of about three inches but showing increase as it goes down. The president of the Pinetucky Mining and Mineral Land company, Col. James B. Merrill of Edwardsville, Alabama says the company will soon add a plant for the treatment of concentrates. The Crown Point Gold Mines, sitting just a short distance from the Pinetucky mines are equally as rich as the Pinetucky mines. There is a six foot vein and is increasing in size and is said to be several miles long but only one mile of it is located on the Crown Point property. The veing extends on to Arbacoochee which is another rich mining town. __ NEW GOLD MINE TO OPEN Mr. J.F. Hilton of Edwardsville has been prospecting in the range of mountains south of Arbacoochee since about the first of the year and seems to be well pleased with the prospects. He says he finds gold all over the mountains on the branches and hillsides. He informs us that a company is being formed and will open and operate a gold mine nine miles south of Heflin by the first of June. He says that the gold is of a very fine quality and is found in abundance. Mr. Hilton also showed us a piece of crystalized quartz which resembles what is known as the Australian diamond and is said to be very valuable. This quartz is found in large quantities and may some day prove to be of great value. __ LEGAL NOTICE - Estate of John Ross, deceased Probate Court of Cleburne County, Ala Letters of executorship upon the estate of John Ross, deceased, having been granted on the 9th day of May 1893 by Hon. S.P. Baber, Judge of Probate of Cleburne County, notice is hereby given that all persons having claims against said estate will be required to present the same within the time allowed by law or that the same will be barred. J.R. Moore __ R.A. Noell and son Alex, spent a few days this week in the gold regions. __ Mr. R. Jenkins and daughter Miss Nannie are out in the gold fields prospecting this week. __ Master Frank Glenn, nephew of D.J. H. Harrison of this place, spent a few days in the city last week. __ Messrs. E.B. Landers and E.T. Black were called to Seddon yesterday by a telegram to attend the bedside of Mrs. S.C. Robison who is very sick. Mrs. Robison is a sister of Mr. Black and a sister-in-law to Mr. Landers. __ On last Thursday while Mr. F.M. Campbell was attempting to descend into the cellar under his store, the step ladder on which he was going down broke, causing him to fall and receive very painful injuries. We are glad to state that he is rapidly recovering. __ ANOTHER DEMOCRAT One of the happiest men we have seen in some time is B.M. Bayol our popular depot agent at this place. He informs us that it is a boy and weighs eight pounds. The boy and it's mother are doing spendidly. We congratulate you, Ben. __ On last Sunday the the residence of the bride's parents near Heflin, Mr. Joe Smith and Miss Martha Peterson were joined together in the hold bonds of matrimony. These two young people are well and favorably known in this community and have the hearty congratulations of all who know them. The waiters were Terrell Dority and MIss Eliza Peterson, Virgil Evans and Miss Dora Peterson, Noell Webb and Miss Jodie Allen, Dow Hami and Miss Thrasher. The New Era extends congratulations. __ Marriage - - Mr. J.H. Wiley of the Lathrop Lumber company and Miss Mary Coleman, yesterday, in Riverside. After the ceremonies the happy couple will leave on an extensive tour to Memphis and other points in Tennessee. __ E. W. Landers is visiting his parents at Wildwood, Randolph County, Ala. __ Beautiful photograph work is being done by Martin & Weaver. Everybody should have their pictures taken while Martin and Weaver are located here. __ Mr. and Mrs. W. Thompson, father and mother of Mrs. E.E. Stricklen of this place, spent Thursday in the city. __ Mrs. J.F. Wilder, who has been visiting the family of R. Jenkins in this city for the past two or three weeks, returned to her home in Meridian, Miss., last Tuesday. __ Mr. R.A. Echols of Harmony Grove, GA, who is interested in the gold mines in this county, passed through the city last Sunday night enroute to his home. He is well pleased with our gold deposits and speaks as though he might come and cast his lot among us. __ DIED - - At hre home at Blake's Mills, this county, last Saturday, Mrs. J.B. Stallings. She leaves a husband and several small children to mourn for her, together with her many friends. The New Era extends its sympathies to the bereaved family. __ Captain N.P. Turner, manager of the Wise Gold Mining Company near Arbacoochee left last week for St. Louis, MO. He goes to get a forty stamp mill which he will erect at an early date. Everything seems to be working lovely at the mines and everybody is happy. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, May 25, 1893 ANOTHER RICH GOLD MINE - - Found in what is known as Trickum Valley, it sold the same day for $$11,000. One of the finest gold mines the county and located about eleven miles east of the city was discovered one day last week and sold the same day for $11,000. __ The Confederate Veterans have a meeting in Anniston, next Saturday. __ Mr. T.R. Blake and family left last Friday for Atlanta, GA where he expects to reside in the future. __ Mrs. J.D. Taylor of Guntersville is visiting her sister, Mrs. M.E. Carruth at Bell Town near this city. __ BORN - Unto Mr. and Mrs. J.F. Wessinger on last Sunday, a fine girl. No wonder J.F. has a smile on him. __ A rich vein of gold has been discovered on the John Tolleson place located three miles from Heflin. The mine is said to be very rich. __ Mr. E.W. Teague of Davistown, we are sorry to learn, is confined to his bed with sickness. Dr. Harrison of this city is attending him. __ Carson Teague who has been visiting his parents at Davistown for the past twoweeks returned last week and will resume his studies at the Heflin High School. __ For Sale - - 2000 old newspapers for sale at this office for 15 cents per hundred. __ Prof. E.E. Stricklen and wife who have been spending the past weeks in Iron City with friends and relatives, left last Monday for Texas where they will reside in the future. __ W.T.
