Mr. Lipham leaves an afflicted wife and fourteen children, eleven boys and three girls together with many grandchildren and friends to mourn his death. He was a loving and sympathetic husband, a kind and considerate father, a pleasant and agreeable companion and friend and above all a model christian. Payne of Chulafinnee, this county, fell from a second story window at the Merchants' Hotel in Montgomery last Friday night and broke his neck. He died instantly. Mr. Payne was well and favorably known throughout this county and was one of Cleburne's most prosperous farmers. He went to Montgomery as a witness in the United States Court. He registered at the Merchants' Hotel shortly before dinner and there met an old friend, J.R. Caldwell, of Anniston, but formerly of this city. They strolled around town together and then Mr. Caldwell carried him to the government building and made an effort to have him appear before the jury once, but failed and they returned to the hotel. After supper, Mr. Caldwell asked him if he ws going out to hear Col. Oates speak and he replied that he was not but intended to retire and went to his room. Caldwell told him to lock his door as he would be absent for some time; they were to room together. When Caldwell returned from the speaking, he knocked at the door for admission and Payne arose to open the door but forgetting that the key was under the pillow, tried to open the door and failing, returned to get the key and the bed being near a window, it is supposed that he stumbled and fell out. He was found to be dead when reached by Caldwell and others, his neck having been broken by the fall.
