Atkins is sick at his home on Ross street. __ Mr. D.B. Harris of FishHead, was in Heflin this week. __ Mr. W.E. Carter and wife of Bowdon, GA are visiting relatives in the city. __ Mr. W.A. Scarbrough of Iron City was in our city on business Tuesday. __ Mrs. H.C. Dunston visited relatives and friends at Beason's Mills this week. __ Mrs. A.A. Dean of Biloxi, Miss., is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.P. Bedwell in our city. __ Mrs. Cysell of Bay, St. Louis, Mis. is visiting her father and mother, Mr.and Mrs. J.P. Bedwell in this city. __ Mr. L.M. Powell, section foreman on the Southern Railway at this place returned Tuesday night from a visit to his father in Chilton County. __ Mrs. Smith, mother of ex-Governor W.H. Smith of Birmingham, died at her home in Randolph County last week. The New Era extends its sympathies to the bereaved relatives and friends of the deceased. __ Mr. J.F. Hilton Jr., son of Mr. J.F. Hilton of near this place, who has been in Bradford, Penn., for several years returned home Saturday. Pennsylvania seems to have agreed with John very much as he looks like a 200 pound porker. We welcome him among us. __ Died - -Miss Annie Stewart of Munford, daughter of Sam Stewart formerly of this county and granddaughter of Mr. S.O. Striplin of Chulafinnee, died last Friday, age 17 years. Miss Stewart was a refined and cultured lady and leaves a host of sorrowing friends to mourn for her. __ The editor returns thanks to Mr. Mat J. Evans of near town for a fine 27 pound melon presented to him on Monday. It was the finest we have seen this season. Mr. Evans is one of Cleburne's foremost farmers and best citizens and as the saying goes "lives at home and boards at the same place". __ On Tuesday evening while Mr. Calvin Brown of this county was returning from Edwardsville in his wagon, some one fired upon him from the rear about the Duncan old place inflicting a very painful though not necessarily fatal wound. The parties or party who did the shooting are not known. The ball entered in the left side of his back and came out the front. __ NEWPAPER Issue of Thursday, September 12, 1895 WILDWOOD Community News Mr. C.D. King is on the sick list. His little son who has had dropsy for some time we are sorry to note is no better. __ Mrs. E.E. Lee who has been sick for the past week is better. __ Mr. Oliver Gaston and mother are visiting relatives in Chambers county. __ LOCAL and PERSONAL News Mrs. W.J. Lake and sister and son Caz, are visiting in Wedowee. __ H.D. Landers and wife of Wildwood, visited relatives in Heflin this week. __ A little child of Largus Bell of Edwardsville, died Wednesday and was buried at Bell Town today. __ Mr. Austin Strickland, better known as "Shakespeare" has closed his school and is now among us. __ For Sale - - Jersey Bull, 4 months old; will weigh about 350 pounds gross. For further information see A.W. Singleton, Chullafinnee. __ Mr. W.E. Tolleson has returned from a trip to the Lone Star State. He informs us that he will leave this fall for that state where he and his family will reside in the future. We regret to lose them from among us. __ We saw our friend J.W. Hunnicutt last Friday morning hustling around trying to find a strong pair of scales and upon inquiry found that he had an arrival, a 10 pound boy and wished to weigh him. This is John's first, and he is the happiest fellow in Heflin. Mother and youngster are getting along nicely. __ In the circuit court at Edwardsville in the case of the State vs. Ben Crawford, for the murder of A.M. Palmer, the jury returned a verdict of guilty of manslaughter in the first degree and sentenced him to nine years in the penitentiary. The State vs. Henry Evans for the murder of A.M. Palmer, has begun. There are seventy witnesses in all. __ DIED - - at her residence in Heflin, Ala., on Tuesday, September 10th inst., Mrs. Margaret E. Carruth. She has been sick for the past year and her death was not unexpected. She leaves five sons and a large number of other relatives with a host of friends who mourn their loss. The deceased was 58 years old and was an estimable christian lady. ___ MARRIED - - On last Wednesday evening at the residence of the bride's parents Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Tweedell, Mr. Joe Fowler of Hightower to Miss Ella Tweedell of near Bowdon, GA, with Rev. W.J. Lovvorn officiating. The bride is an accomplished and pleasant young ldy and the groom is a good citizen and well to do farmer of this county. The New Era wishes them success and happiness over the sea of life. ___ We have just been informed that on sixteen acres of land, Mr. and Mrs. Crane, living about six miles south of Heflin, have recently finished making up their syrup, and to their part have 100 gallons, will make four bales of cotton and 100 bushels of born, besides fodder, potatoes, peas, etc. Mr. Crane is sixty and Mrs. Crane is fifty-eight years of age. They plowed their crop with an ox and did all of their own work. This shows what can be done on Cleburne county soil by people who will work. __ Heflin's first bale of cotton arrived this morning. It was raised by Mr. W.T. Howle of Beason's Mills. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, September 19, 1895 LOCAL and PERSONAL News Near Heflin, Saturday morning, Alton Caldwell, son of U.S. Deputy John R. Caldwell, accidentally dropped a 38 Colt revolver on the floor, causing a cartridge to explode. The bullet entered the flesh of Alton's left arm and cut off the great toe of Curtis Sorrells who was sitting near. Both wounds are painful but not necessarily dangerous. __ Mr. S.E. Bobo of Edwardsville is manipulating the telegraph keys at the depot at night in the absence of Mr. Thomas Powell who is on vacation. __ Mr. E.S. Swift informs us that he will move to Ashland, Clay county this week. We regret to lose them from among us and wish them prosperity at their new home. __ Our good friend Roscoe Conkling Stephenson has gone to Oxford to attend the Methodist Conference. Roscoe is a great bicyclist and if he makes as good a delegate as he has a local wheelman great will be his name. __ CLEBURNE County Circuit Court Sentences Passed James Morgan sentenced to 299 days hard labor for the county for carrying concealed weapons. Ben Crawford sentenced to 9 years in the penitentiary for murder of A.M. Palmer (case being appealed to supreme court). Henry Evans sentenced to fifteen months in the penitentiary for the murder of A.M. Palmer. Thomas Shoemaker sentenced to twenty five months in the penitentiary for grand larcency.
