R.L. Evans and L.D. Reid, two promising young men of Edwardsville visited their sweethearts at Cross Plains, GA last week. __ Miss Berta Faver, who has been spending Christmas with the family of Colonel J.B. Merrill, returned to her home near Franklin, GA on last Saturday. __ OAK LEVEL Community News Two genuine cases of matrimony were developed in the neighborhood on Christmas. The victims were Mr. William Moore and Miss Annie Barton and Mr. Flem Wheeler and Miss Adaline Palmer and when last heard from all were doing well. __ LOCAL and PERSONAL News W.J. Snow was in Anniston last week. __ Mrs. Mary Pearce is visiting relatives in Bessemer this week. __ Mr. J.S. Hampton left this morning for his home in Raleigh, N.C. __ Miss Eula Herron has returned from Atlanta where she is visiting relatives. __ Mr. J. Edwards and wife of near here, left last week for their new home in Louisianna. __ Mr. A.J. Simmons, our popular saw mill man has moved his estimable family back to Villa Rica, GA. __ Miss Nannie Walden of Atlanta spent the holidays with her Uncle and his family, J.C. Bean of this city. __ Mr. T.W. Garrett of Boaz, Ala., formerly a citizen of this county and Mr. E.P. Word, were in our city this week on a visit and paid our office a pleasant call. __ Mrs. Pet Wright of Choccolocco and Miss Zip DeArman of DeArmanville, visited the family of Oco DeArman in Heflin this week. __ Frank Gillam of Bordon Springs, Cleburne County, charged with moonshining, was arraigned before United States Commissioner Randolph last night but was discharged. Anniston Hot Blast __ Mr. A.J. Simmons, our popular saw mill man, shipped last week to Mr. E.A. Howle of Texas, 7000 feet of fine yellow pine timber. It takes get up and get to ship lumber from home to the Lone Star State. __ The sad news of the death of Mr. H.C. Hubbard of Mesquite, Texas reached this city on Monday. Mr. Hubbard was a brother of Messrs. W.A. Hubbard and I.E. Hubbard of this city and was also related to our postmaster, J.C. Bean. Mr. Hubbard's death occurred on Christmas day and at the time of his death was about 38 years of age. __ There was a fight yesterday afernoon at U.S. Commissioner Randolph's office between Deputy Collector John R. Caldwell and Deputy Marshall John W. Barker, in which Mr. Caldwell was slightly bruised up. The fight was the result of a misunderstanding of a week ago. Anniston Hot Blast __ Mr. Stephen Nixon of Abel, Ala., was in our city last week. __ DIED - - Miss May Barber, eldest daughter of Judge S.P. Baber of Edwardsville, died January 3rd. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, January 9, 1896 LOCAL and PERSONAL News Mr. and Mrs. J.N. Swift have returned from a visit to relatives and friends in Clay county. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, January 16, 1896 WILDWOOD Community News Mr. Eugene Lee is having the largest new ground cleared of any one in the community. Mr. Wm. Curry is also having a great deal of land clearing done. On last Thursday evening the young men and ladies of the community assembled at Mr. Currys, the former to help Will clear and the latter to help Mrs. Curry quilt. After doing a good days work they all gathered at the house and had an old time dance. _____ Mr. John Sellers, who lives a few miles south of here has his new home ready for occupancy. On last Tuesday while strolling around your correspondent made it convenient to call at John's about the hour of noon and found Mr. A.D. Craft just putting the finishing touches on his chimney. Of course I remained and enjoyed a hearty dinner. I have known John for twenty-five years and he is today the same genuous, true and jovial John that he was when I formed his acquaintance at old Antioch in the summer of 1869. It was there we attended school together; Miss Isidore Perryman, a niece of D.A. Perryman of Rockdale was our teacher. She has since married Mr. Chas. Wilder with whom she now lives near Wedowee. She tried very hard to make good and learned men out of all of us boys but it could not be done. I have not seen her since 1870 but I still remember her and hope again to meet her in the sweet by-and-by. __ On Christmas Day at the residence of the bride's parents Mr. and Mrs. J.F. Halpin, Mr. George Bailey and Miss Artie Halpin were joined in matrimony. Rev. C.S. Morrison officiated. George is an energetic and industrious young man and one who is, in my opinion, worthy of the prize he has won. Miss Artie is a beautiful young lady and is loved and respected by all who know her. __ The new store house which is being erected by Mr. G.V. Shamble, will be completed in a few days. George has bought out the stock of H.D. Landers & sons at Wildwood and will carry on the business at home one mile north of Wildwood. __ It is rumored in this community that Dr. J.M. Harrison of Pinetuckey will get married before corn planting time. __ Mr. Geo. H. Cosper is building a new mill a half mile north of Wildwood. __ CHOCCOLOCCO News Mr. John Borders who had his barn burned several weeks ago has built himself another nice one. __ Mr. Eba Scarbrough of this place who has a farm in south Alabama sent eight fine mules down there this week. __ MARRIED - - on last Sunday evening at the residence of the bride's parents Mr. and Mrs. W.M. Hughes, Mr. Johnny Hudson of near White Plains to Miss Mary Hughes. Rev. M.G. Milligan officiated. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, January 23, 1896 LOCAL and PERSONAL News W.G. Porter met with a painful accident yesterday by stepping on a plank which had a nail in it and stuck the nail in his foot about one inch deep. __ MARRIED - - On last Sunday evening in Edwardsville, Mr. Sam White of Birmingham and Miss Exa Ligon of this city. Mr. White is a popular and trusted engineer of the Southern Railway. Miss Exa is one of Heflin's leading society belle's and has many friends who will join the New Era in wishing the happy couple a safe and pleasant voyage over the sea of life. __ DIED - - On last Saturday morning, after only a weeks illness, little Lucile, infant daughter and only child of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Kitchens of this city. She was laid to rest in the cemetery at this place last Sunday evening. Rev. J.A. Scott pastor of the Baptist church conducted the funeral services. __ BELL's MILLS Community News Mr. Leander Smith and family left last Saturday for Cullman county where they will reside in the future. We wish them properity at their new home. __ Mr. W.A. Bullard and mother, formerly of this county, but now of Texas, who have recently been visiting friends here have returned to their home in the Lone Star State. __ MARRIED - - Mr. W.A. Bullard to Miss Roxie Chandler, with Rev. J.D. Walker, officiating. The happy couple soon after the wedding left for the groom's home in Texas. __ Mr. E.P. Pesnell and nearly all of his family are confined to their beds with sickness. __ Mr. Jno. Brown, our popular miller, is erecting a handsome dwelling. __ Mr. Peter Thompson is quite sick with dropsy. He has not been able to lay down any since Christmas and seems to be no better at this writing. __ Mr. Jas. Pirkle has vacated his school on account of whooping cough and measles. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, January 30, 1896 LOCAL and PERSONAL News Dr. Whit Brock of Roopville, GA is visiting his brother Prof. O.H. Brock of this city. __ Mrs. J.J. Little has returned to her home in Atlanta after several weeks visit to relatives here and in Randolph County. __ DIED - - at his residence about 3 miles south of Heflin last week of typhoid fever, Mr. Dick Green, aged about 16 years. __ Mr. W. Rhodes of Edwardsville was in to see us yesterday and informed us that he would leave in a few days for Texas where he will reside in the future. __ EDWARDSVILLE Community News Mrs. Joicy Edwards, one of the oldest ladies in town, has been very sick but is much better now. __ Mrs. Jane Stephens of Tecumseh, is visiting the family of her son, ex-sheriff W.A. Stephens. __ MUSCADINE Community News G.J. Mills has gone to Atlanta to purchase himself a fine span of horses. __ G.W. Moore has improved his saw mill in our town and is running it to it's full capacity. __ Muscadine has a new blacksmith shop, the proprietor being Joe Hansford from Tallapoosa. __ John W. Brown is making shingles with his new machine. He contemplates building a grist mill. __ CHOCCOLOCCO Community News Mrs. Amy Kelley, the mother of the honorable Dick Kelley, representative of this county, was taken ill very suddenly last Sunday but is some better at this time. __ The late Mrs. Severe Elston's household goods will be sold at administrator's sale on the 10th of February. __ Mr. Johnathan Williams, who lives near the Riddle school, was coming to town Saturday riding a very large mule weighing about 1400 pounds. The mule stumbled while coming down a hill and rolled completely over Mr. Williams breaking his breastbone and injuring him, it is feared, internally. Mr. Williams is in very critical condition. __ OAK LEVEL Community News Crawford Howle is fixing to move up near Rome, GA. __ Amos Johnson of Polk County, GA is on a visit to his sister, Mrs. M.J. Parker. __ WILDWOOD Community News Uncle M.O. Lee has been in feeble health for some time. __ Mr. Jas. M. Lipman is dangerously sick with inflammation of the bowels.
