Smith, wife of Javan J. Smith died at her home nar Fish Head Ala on the morning of July 30th. She had many relatives and friends in this community and throughout the county who will be pained to learn of her death. __ MARRIED - - Last Sunday at the residence of the bride's father R.J. Teague, Miss Della Teague and Robert F. Faulkner married. Miss Della is one of Cleburne's most charming young ladies and Mr. Faulkner is a prosperous farmer of Calhoun County. __ Miss Mittie McLeroy is visiting relatives at Wedowee this week. __ Frank Wessinger and family are spending this week in Heflin. __ Mrs. A.M. Williamson and children of Macon are visiting T.J. Williamson in the city. __ Miss Addie Hughes of Iron City is visiting her sister, Mrs. T.J. Williamson this week. __ Miss Mabel Cooper who has been visiting her Aunt, Mrs. J.C. Lane, returned to her home in Birmingham yesterday. __ Miss Naomi Gillespie who has been visiting in the city for the past three weeks has gone to Bowdon, GA to visit relatives. She will return by way of Heflin, to her home in Boaz, Ala., next week. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, August 13, 1896 LOCAL NEWS W.L. Tolleson and family after spending three weeks in Heflin with parents and friends returned to their home in Gray, Miss., last Tuesday. Jack Tolleson accompanied them. He will make that his home. __ R.L. Denman of Gadsden spent Tuesday in our town. __ W.R. Young of Chulafinnee was in Heflin Tuesday. __ C.C. Nichols, an old Heflin boy, spent a few hours in Heflin yesterday. __ Miss Eulah Robertson of Oxford is visiting her sister, Mrs. D.D. Perryman this week. __ C.C. Lake and his sister Miss Ollie visited friends in Lineville the first of the week. __ Mrs. Joe Lane and her children visited Breman on last Saturday and returned on Tuesday. __ N.L. Parker of Maitland, Ala., circulated among his Heflin friends a couple of days this week. __ M.D. Robison accompanied by his daughter Miss Cora, visited his parents at Bowdon, GA the weekend past. __ LEGAL NOTICE FOR PUBLICATION Land office at Montgomery, Ala July 18, 1896 Notice is hereby given that the following named settler has filed notice of his intention to make final proof in support of his homestead claim and that said proof will be made before the clerk of the circuit court at Edwardsville, Ala., on August 29, 1896, viz: Joseph P. White, homestead entry No. 22,951 for the SE 1/4 of SE 1/4 sec. 35, SW 1/4 of NW 1/4, w 1/2 of sw 1/4 sec. 36, twp. 16 s of r 11 e. He names the following witnesses to prove his continuous residence upon and cultivation of said land, viz: F.T. Otwell of Lecta, Ala; Eli Williams of Lecta, Ala; J.F. Fordham Jr. of Bells Mills, Ala; J.W. Hall of Oswart, Ala. H. Purcell, Register. _____ NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, August 20, 1896 LOCAL NEWS Mrs. J.C. Lane has moved to Bremen. Mrs. Lane will be missed by the people of Heflin. __ Charlie Lake is confined to his home with fever. He has been very sick but improving. __ The colored Methodists are holding a protracted meeting at their church in Heflin. __ G.W. Bachellor, a prominent farmer in Trickem, was in town yesterday. He says the cotton crop in his locality is damaged at least one third by drouth. __ MARRIED - - On Tuesday August 18th, E.R. Stephenson of Anniston and Miss Marie Thompson of Hood, Ala., were married at the residence of the bride's parents. Rocoe is an old Heflin boy and his many friends wish him happiness in his married life. __ Heflin received her first bale of cotton today, about fifteen days earlier than the first received last year. It was brought in by that hustling farmer from near Beasons Mills, J.W. Morris. It weighed 540 pounds and was bought by Landers Bros. for eight cents per pound. __ J.M. McLeroy is in Wedowee this week. __ Chas. Burgess spent Sunday in Edwardsville. __ L.B. Evans of Dolomite, Ala., is visiting his father near Heflin this week. __ Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Bolt left yesterday morning for a weeks visit to relatives in Wedowee. __ L.M. Powell is confined to his home with sickness this week. __ Miss Naomie Gillespie of Boaz, Ala., who has been visiting in Heflin several weeks was called home last Monday by the illness of her father. __ MARRIED - - at the Baptist church at 3:30 o'clock on Wednesday p.m., Mr. M.L. Watkins of Keysville, Virginia and Miss Virginia Stephenson, with Rev. W.W. Roop officiating. Quite a number of friends were present to wish them much happiness. The happy couple left immediately for Keysville, VA. The tour will be extended to the Virginia Beach, Richmond and Washington. Their present home will be Oxford, North Carolina. copy Bowdon Intelligence. ___ NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, August 27, 1896 LOCAL NEWS Walter Simmons is visiting his parents in Villa Rica, GA __ A.C. Stephenson is confined to his home in Heflin with fever. __ Rev. J.F. Thompson is visiting relatives in St. Clair county this week. __ BORN - - to Mr. and Mrs. M.D. Robison on Wednesday evening a fine girl. __ NOTICE - - I will come to Heflin the first of September and take charge of the gin and grist mill and will in the future as has been done in the past please my patrons. Bring your cotton and corn to my mill and gin. E.S. Swift. __ M.D. Robison received a telegram Wednesday stating that his mother was dangerously sick. He left immediately for Bowdon. __ FOR SALE - - The quarterly conference of the Heflin charge M.E. Church South has authorized the pastor and trustees to sell the parsonage.
