Wiggins has moved his family to Birmingham. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, November 19, 1896 LOCAL News Miss Anna Henry of Dossville, Miss., after spending a week visiting relatives and friends in and near Heflin returned home last Friday morning. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, November 26, 1896 J.F. Willoughby who has for several years past been doing a mercantile business in Heflin, is reported to have moved to Texas. __ J.A. Kidd, of Newell, Randolph County, Ala., was in Heflin selling cotton yesterday. __ MARRIED - - at the home of the brides parents Mr. and Mrs. A.L.McCollum, near Heflin, Mr. Hancock of Calhoun to Miss Nellie McCollum. Esq. Davies performed the ceremony. ___ "Aunt" Mary Pierce has the misfortune of scalding her foot very badly by overturning a pot of coffee on Tuesday. __ J.N. Harris while out buggy riding this morning was thrown from the buggy and painfully hurt. His arm was dislocated at the elbow. __ W.H. Griffith, gold wire artist arrived in Heflin today and will make all kinds of jewelery while you wait. __ Miss Donia Dyer of Atlanta visited the family of E.W. Landers in Heflin this week. She extended her visit to relatives in Randolph County. __ J.D. Landers of Ducan, Indian Territory, visited his brothers E.W. and T.I. Landers in Heflin this week. He has gone to Randolph to visit his father and other relatives. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, December 3, 1896 The courthouse of Randolph County, Ala., at Wedowee, was burned Wednesday. All it's contents, records and papers were burned. Loss of the building was about $5000. ____ Whit, the six year old son of S.M. Denson of this county, left Clinton, S.C. on December 1st and arrived in Heflin Dec. 2nd having traveled 300 miles in two days, alone. He has been visiting his sister in Clinton for the past twelve months. His father met him here last Wednesday and carried him home. ___ W.G. Milligan visisted relatives in Choccolocco Monday. __ Owen Black came up from Anniston on Sunday and spent the day with his family. __ The materialization of the beautiful snow has created an active demand for firewood in our town. No services of any kind at the churches last Sunday on account of the bad weather. __ Rolley Jenkins and son have established a store at Pinetucky. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, December 10, 1896 LOCAL NEWS Mrs. G.B. Payne is quite sick at her home on Bell street. __ Dr. J.L. McClintock formerly of this city but now of Fishhead, Clay County, is visiting friends in the city. __ BORN - - a fine girl arrived at the home of Prof. and Mrs. John H. Ingram last Saturday evening. __ J.S. Brown, who has been living on the Tallapoosa river near Heflin for several years, has moved to Walter, in Cullman County. Mr. Brown is a good farmer and we wish him much success in his new home. __ DEPLORABLE ACCIDENT - - Conductor John Wiggins fell under a moving train at Anniston. As freight train No. 43 on the Southern Railway was approaching the city from Atlanta yesterday morning shortly after 9 o'clock, conductor John Wiggins, when it was just above the Oxanna Hotel, slipped or stumbled and fell from the top of the front end of his caboose to the track and the wheels of the car passed over his left leg and right foot. The train was slowing up for the tank and stopped almost immediately after the awful accident. The crew and others who saw what had happened went to where the injured man was lying. His body was just outside the track and his left leg across the rail. Dr. Bowcock the company physician was notified and Mr. Wiggins was carried to the union depot on the 9:47 west bound passenger train which came along shortly afterward and places on a cot in the employes room. There Drs. Bowcock and Walker amputated the left leg and part of the right foot. It is not known exactly how the accident occurred. The car tops were covered with ice and he may have slipped or may have been thrown by the quick action of the air brakes as the train was being stopped. It is said that he fell just as he started to climb down the ladder from the top of the car. Mr. Wiggins was for a number of years a citizen of Heflin adn only a few weeks ago moved his family to Woodlawn. His many friends have learned with regret of his awful accident. He was carried from Anniston to the Hillman hospital in Birmingham. He is doing well as could be expected and his recovery is earnestly hoped for by his friends. _________ CLACK Community News News is scarce. The boys say that the revenue men are so thick in our part of the country that they will have to go to Heflin to get their Christmas whiskey. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, December 17, 1896 C.H. Coggins and George D. Bunch of Edwardsville were in town yesterday. __ Miss Lee Traylor of Wedowee, is visiting the family of Col. R.E. Merrill in town. __ Elijah Coffey and family of near Edwardsville left here yesterday for Mississippi where they will in the future reside. __ Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Little of Atlanta visited the parents of Mrs. Little, Mr. and Mrs. D.A. Perryman in town several says this week. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, December 24, 1896 BELLTOWN Community News DIED - - Mr. James Webb died on the 18th of this month. He was an old resident of this county and has been feeble for some time. His burial took place on the 20th and the words spoken by Rev.Marion Brown upon that occasion will be much comfort to those present. ____ LOCAL NEWS R.J. Perryman, a popular traveling salesman is in Heflin and will spend the holidays with his parents. __ Mr. and Mrs. Homer Furr of Villa Rica, GA are visting the parents of Mrs. Furr, Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Simmons near town. ___ J.N. Swift and family who have been making Syllacauga their home for several months, arrived in Heflin Tuesday night and will make this their home again. ___ J.R. Bain, one of the best farmers in the southern portion of Cleburne, was in town Monday. ___ The death of Uncle Jimmie Webb of near Chulafinnee, which occurred on last Monday removes one of the oldest men of this county from the walks of life. He was a christian gentleman of the old school, loved and respected by all who knew him. Peace to his ashes. _____ DIED - - Mr. John F. Wiggins, a conductor on a freight train on the Southern Railway, who was severely injured at Oxanna about ten days, died at the Hillman hospital in Birmingham last Monday. After the amputation of his foot and leg, gangrene set in and it became necessary to amputate a second time on both his legs. After the second operation he did not have the vitality to rally and died. His many friends here sorrow at his death and extend sympathy to his bereaved family. His remains were brought here from Birmingham on Tuesday night and interred in the Heflin cemetery today.
