T.A. Higdon of Tallaposa GA is holding revival services at the Baptist church this week. __ Dr. John B. Andrews, the great revivalist will begin a tent meeting at this place early in June. __ J. Van Smith, living near Dr. Harris in Clay county, had the misfortune to have his barn and contents and three mules destroyed by fire Tuesday night, loss about $500. Insurance on the property had expired the 3rd. The fire was of incendiary origin. __ W.C. Barrett, general foreman at the Hicks - Wise gold mine, was in Heflin last Saturday and went on to Chattanooga the same day. Mr. Barrett informed the New Era that he had in one week taken from a shaft 20 feet deep, from $2000. to $2500. in gold. The Hicks - Wise gold mine is one of the richest mines in the South and present owners will fully develop it. ___ NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, May 13, 1897 Mrs. R.B. Baird has been dangerously sick this week but is reported to be somewhat better. __ Rev. R.B. Baird has raised $75. for the purpose of seating and painting the Methodist Church. __ J.N. Swift came up from his saw mill in Clay county last Saturday and spent a few days with family. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, May 20, 1897 J. Ross Smith of Alpharetta, GA is visiting relatives in this city. __ Mrs. G.B. Payne left Helfin last Saturday for DeBerniere, Ala., where she will spend a month. __ Virgil Brown and S.M. Denson will conduct an all day singing at Evans Chapel the fifth Sunday in this month. Everyone is invited. ___ There will be an all day singing in memory of James Webb, at Bethlehem six miles south of Heflin the fifth Sunday in this month. Everybody invited to come and bring their Sacred Harp song books. ___ NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, May 27, 1897 Joe Burton, who was charged with the murder of Jethro Evans, one of his school mates in 1895, and who has been on trial since the first of last week, was found guilty and sentenced to five years in the penitentiary. ___ Born, to Mr. and Mrs. E.W. Landers, a fine girl. __ Miss Bessie Roop of Roopville, GA is visiting her cousins the Misses Henry on Ross street. __ JOHN W. McDANIEL DIES - - at the residence of J.C. McDaniel is son, in Heflin, on Thursday, 27th inst., of old age, Mr. John W. McDaniel, age 89 years. He was one of the pioneers of this county, having lived here more than 60 years. His home is in Calhoun County.
