Garrett returned home last week from IronCity where she has been visiting her mother who has been dangerously ill but is now better. __ Mrs. J.F. Stovall who has been spending some months in Texas with her children is expected home in a few days much to the joy of her family here. ___ J.T. Rusk and his lovely daughter Laura paid the city of Anniston a visit last week. __ Miss Mary Johnson, a beautiful and accomplished young lady of Palmetto, GA is out on a visit to the family of Dr. W.M. Ligon. __ LOCAL NEWS Thomas Warren Powell visited Tallapoosa on Tuesday. __ Miss Fannie Striplin of Oaklone is visiting her Aunt Mrs. W.A. Hubbard. __ Miss Canada of IronCity is visiting her cousin, Miss Bulah Jenkins in the city. __ D.E. Teague, sheriff of Washington County is visiting John J. Boman in Heflin. Mr. Teague was raised in this county but moved to Washington county twenty-five years ago. __ W.G. Milligan, R.E. Merrill, W.A. Neal, D.W. Vaughan and D.W. Detrick have been appointed by the Governor as delegates to the international gold mining convention to be held in Denver, Colorado July 7, 1897. __ J.W. Hunnicutt, D.W. Vaughan and Albert Neal of Heflin left Monday for a weeks sport and to look out a place for a new saw mill. They will go down the Tallapoosa river in a boat for about 75 miles. No doubt they will enjoy themselves. ___ An exciting runaway occurred on Ross street Wednesday afternoon which came near resulting in the serious injury of J.A. Owens. Mr. Owens had hitched his horse to his buggy intending to drive out to the saw mill some miles east of town. His horse became frightened at the buggy top and ran away overturning the buggy on him. He was not dangerously hurt but it was a miraculous escape. Cheatwood _____ LOCAL NEWS Born to Dr. and Mrs. W.A. Neal yesterday a fine 11 pound boy. __ O.H. Brown has been appointed as postmaster at Muscadine and T. Steed appointed at OakLevel. __ Mrs. Rosa Jenkins and children of Birmingham are visiting the family of Rolley Jenkins in town. __ Mrs. J.C. Osborne has been appointed postmistress of this place. __ Mrs. Pinson and children of Oklahoma Territory visted her sister, Mrs. W.A. Hubbard in the city this week and went from here to Chulafinne to visit other relatives. __ Deputy Collector Green accompanied by Deputy Marshalls Sullivan, Jackson, Zaner, Black and Awtrey captured a large illicit distillery five miles northeast of Edwardsville this week. The capacity of the still was 100 gallons. 7,500 gallons of beer and 20 gallons of whiskey was destroyed.
